Older Leica sensors

I have been using a Leica M-9 (sensor spots recently repaired) and M-Monochrome. Recently, Leica has made big leaps in sensor pixels. Should I just give up on my workhorses and shell out big money for the new ones?

If you are getting good results, and the camera is doing the job, WHY? Old Licaa's are better that a lot of todays new, other brand , cameras.

The Leica M-9 was my favorite camera for several years, until its sensor failed. I regret letting it go and trading it for a newer Leica. After two trade-ins, I have a M-10, which is not my favorite, and a Q which does not have changeable lenses. The M-9 had enough pixels for the way most of us post and display digital photos.

I have gone from the M9 to the M10 and now to the M10-R. Having started with an M3 back in the days of film, I can say without hesitation that I think the M10-R is the best Leica ever made. I certainly don't regret trading up. (Also, I note that the CCD sensor for the M9 is no longer available.)

Thank you. I had my sensor repaired for the M-9. I am unsure if the higher pixel number of the M10Rr is worth the cost for most uses.

I'm using an 18 year old 16Mp sensor on a couple of my cameras. It still works quite well. In some cases, it's my first choice to take on a photography outing.

I can comment on only the Leica M10 Monochrom, my next earliest Leica is the M3 I bought in 1954 and loved for 55 years. The Monochrom is nothing but incredible, after nine months it still amazes. With the 35mm F/1.4 Summilux-M ASPH I find that many of my needs are nicely accommodated by cropping, digital zoom, which has been a no-no for years with other cameras. Your question lacks the context of what your needs are, maybe an upgrade might not be an advantage in your personal case.

I have the 18mp Leica M Monochrome, and it meets my needs, but I do respect the results I have seen from the M10. Many thanks.

41 MP (M10-R) versus 24 MP (M10) and better dynamic range on the M10-R — those are probably the two primary differences between the two models. The M10-R also has other features (I.e., quieter shutter) that were on the M10-P but not the M10.
