I'm staying away from Black Friday deals. Too tempting.

Why do we call it "Black Friday?" Shouldn't it be Bright Friday?

William, it's a finance related term. The Christmas shopping frenzy focused on the day after Thanksgiving is meant to bring those store who are in the red up past the break even point and put them in the black.

Used to be the day after Thanksgiving where stores who have been losing money all year finally become profitable “in the black”.Doesn’t mean much today when Black Friday starts in October.

I heard it was employees that came up with the term because they worked harder on Black Friday than any other day in the year.

Don't let those folks fool you. They're definitely not in the red or losing money up until black friday. They're making a plenty of money. A business would have to be pretty stupid to operate all through the year, while being in the red with hopes that a day called black friday is going to get them out the hole. There are lots of pitiful, gullible people out there though that actually believe this mess.

I worked in retail accounting for a major corporation for 15 years in the 70s and 80s. This is indeed a fact and that’s why you see many retail operations close up shop after the Holiday Season. Most retail profits happen from Black Friday until Christmas. Believe it or not.
