We need to get rid of DirecTV to save a bit more $$. After Live PD and Cops was cancelled we don't feel we need DirecTV any longer. When Roku first came out we used it for a while. It was a little clumsy to use, but it was a great value. If any of you are current Roku users I have a few questions. We mainly enjoy old police oriented series, especially the really old black and white ones. What networks or channels have them?

Is Turner Classic Movies (TCM) available?

Thanks from a couple of oldsters.

We have Roku and Netflix. Roku came as an app on our new flat screen tv.
Roku has plenty of old cop shows and some b&w shows too. You just have to put up with the commercials.

I believe you will find that anything you want along that genre is available to you. There are so many free channels out there that once again, you will not be found wanting. No need for Direct TV or any of the cable companies.

Have you tried ROKU's search feature? I've found the RetroTech channel to be quite fascinating.

Roku is only your link to streaming. Amazon has one, and Apple. What you need to look at is streaming services like Hulu, Sling, Netflix and find one that has Turner.

Sling has it but you need to upgrade their service. I think Sling would end up costing you 40 a month but give you all the channels that cable has.

Roku is great. It can also add up. Make a list of the channels you need, want and don't care about. Then see what it will cost to get them.

There are some good sites out there that compare the channels offered by each. Sling, owned by DirectTV is a nice option (but a little confusing). If you add some to the premium content apps like Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, etc. you get a lot of options, but you may not be saving money any more.

We just wait, at some point they will have a free weekend, and we just watch the hell out of the stuff that service has. We pay for 4, I have Amazon prime so we automatically get that as part of the package, then we pay for Sling, Netflix, and Hulu, all their cheapest option.

I like having Prime and then added Hulu as part of our cell phone service. Check around to see what you already have access to without extra cost. I do like getting local news so had an antenna installed. There are so many “on the go” apps, that it’s almost impossible to know the whole of gamut of possibilities. I just saw an advertisement for Peacock...time for more research

Lots of good advice here. Here's my suggestions:
- Make sure you have decent internet bandwidth. We occasionally get buffering delays with Roku, but they're not bad.
- There are lots of channels with Roku. There are some that specialize in old movies, 50's TV shows, cowboy TV shows and movies, etc.
- However, I think you'll also want a source of news and contemporary TV shows. I suggest YouTube TV. YouTube TV has 85 channels included in the monthly subscription. Current cost is $65/mo. DirecTV tried to raise our monthly rate to $170 before we dumped them. YouTube TV has, for me, all the channels we want to watch, including all of the cable news channels, all the networks, PBS, Turner Classic Movies, HGTV, and great sports coverage.
- If you have a Roku device or have Roku built into your smart TV, it's basically free (but YouTube TV isn't).
- If you have a Roku device or have Roku built into your smart TV, you can try YouTube TV free for a week or two.
- Of course, there are optional channels with additional charges (e.g. HBO, Acorn, Starz, etc).
- If you have an Amazon Prime subscription, you can, without additional cost, watch their Prime streaming service through a Roku channel.

"Twowindsbear" is correct, select the "SEARCH" option on left side of Roku screen, input what you wish to watch and it will show you every channel offering the choice, together with whether there is a charge. Between PRIME and Netflix, there isn't really much more you need to pay for. Happy watching.

We moved 3 TVs to Roku last year, but have UTube TV as well, so can’t comment on the channel lineup. I don’t love their remote - no mute button is especially annoying, and when using another service such as Netflix or UTube TV, it requires multiple steps to get to a channel. Two of ours are separate units with no issues, but the USB plug in version sometimes freezes (heat?) and has to be unplugged from power to reset. It’s annoying enough that I’m going to replace it and it’s less than a year old. Also, on one TV, it would never work because it wouldn’t pass through the HDCP protocol to the content provider. In the end, we added a USB to RGB converter and fed the TV via RGB. All in all, I’d only give it a 5 out of 10. I would certainly recommend you get the one with a volume control (typically $10 more), so you don’t need 2 remotes to run the TV.

CBS all access has the Perry Mason series. One of my favorites.
