Did you keep a note of activation keys? You should be able to download the software from its source and reactivate it.

If you can remove the hard drive you can connect it through a docking device to the new computer to see what you want to have on the new computer. But if you are on a PC you will have no real alternative but to do a fresh reinstall of all of your software since merely copying the files will not enter the software into the computer's registry.

Companies like Microsoft, Adobe, On1, Capture One, DXO, etc all keep a record of your activation keys so that reinstallation shouldn't really be a problem.

Locate your sign-on credentials for each vendor and access and download the current software. Download the files rather than executing directly from their site. Add all these files into your back-up storage the same as you store your images and any valuable digital files, including your user names and current passwords.

Must be reinstalled - either from backup files of the downloaded program or from the original CD's.
If you don't have backup files, you should be able to contact the vendor and get another installation package or you can take your hard drive to a data recovery business (this is expensive) and see what they can recover.

Install the software on the new computer the same as you did on the old one.

If you are talking about Adobe processing software, just log onto their site. When logged on, you will see a list of your programs. Just download and re-install. You should then remove the computer that crashed from their records.

When you download your software again keep a copy in a folder, when you upgrade it keep the upgrade in the same folder, create a word document with the activation codes on it in the same folder AND make sure you have a backup copy of the folders and you won't have this problem again !!!!!!!!
Do not rely on the suppliers having/keeping a record of your code (although you better hope they have otherwise you might be purchasing some of it again). Look upon the hassle and possible expense as a lesson learned.

I leave the original in my Downloads folder. I've only ever had one USB stick fail on me.

I have two folders off the root called "Backups" and "Downloads".
I dislike drilling down through "My Documents".
(They are also backed up by Carbonite.)
