Squirrel with white on ears?

Pardon the quality of these pictures. What kind of squirrel is this? Taken at 45 degrees north in Wisconsin.
With white on back of ears is this just a mutant?
I will be 75 next week and have never seen one like this. I did a quick search and other people have seen them around the country. I have not seen any answers I would consider authoritative.

Looks OK to me, gray squirrel. Some colorations vary among the grays.

Our Gray squirrels down here in Houston, TX all have the white on their ears.

Don't see and quality issues. Yep it has tufts of white hair at the base of it's skull. Please stay well and keep on sharing.
