I think I’d look at the Yongnuo or Godox equivalents of the Canon 430/470 and 600 series. Pay attention to the features (especially RF triggering if you think you’ll ever use it off camera or with multiple flashes) and the guide number.

Agree, I have the Yongnuo 600 - it is so close a clone of the Canon that tutorials for the Canon are good guides for the Yongnuo.

Me too - I have both the Canon and the Yongnuo, and while I can’t comment on the long term reliability, you can’t tell the difference except by the logo on the case and the HUGE difference in the price (you can buy 3 equivalent Yongnuos for the price of one Canon.

Another vote for Yongnuo. I have sever Canon and Yongnuo flash units and I've never had any problems with my Yongnuo units. I've had them for several years now and they work as good as when I first bought them.

I have used the Godox V1C for a while now. Battery life is crazy good. Hot shoe locking mechanism is like that of a Canon top shelf flash. I use it on and off camera. Build quality is excellent. I have several of these units. Solid system. It just simply works every time.

What type of photography will you be using the flash for? Yongnuo makes several, two that I use are a YN660 and the YN24EX. First one is standard dedicated flash and the second is great for macro or can be used as a regular flash. Coverage may not be as great but an added advantage is independent light heads with variable power.

I have used Godox and have a GODOX Thinklite TTL TT685C that is for the Canon 77D. It worked great and had quite a bit of reach. If you are interested I would sell it for $60. Used mainly for my nephew's Eagle ceremony and have since sold the camera. Check it out here
