I would suggest that anyone using a refrigerator for storage have a lockable latch or closure to prevent children or anyone from getting into it. In the past there have been significant numbers of suffocation in refrigerators. I'm sure the old timers, like me, here recall those reports in years past.

This response is exactly why I often do not respond to post on this site.

You might go and look at most refrigerators in anyone's home or hey, go look at your refrigerator. Notice that it no longer has a latch on it? You might even empty your refrigerator, even the shelves, climb inside and close the door, oh and of course, do it with safety in mind, have someone watch you do this so you can't some how get caught in there. PLEASE! That is because everyone realized that this was a problem a vary long time ago and so latching doors are longer on refrigerators any more.

Many if not most areas have bylaws that require refrigerator doors to be removed if they are in a publicly accessible area for that reason. If it's inside your home you are deemed to have control over access.

To correct your assertion:
Refrigerators are not made with latching doors any more.
That does not mean that refrigerators with latching doors do not exist.

When I went to graduate school I rented an apartment. The previous tenant sold us his refrigerator since we were just starting housekeeping. After a few years the refrigerator became too small and needed to be manually defrosted so we bought a new one. The lab at school needed a refrigerator so the old one went there. Last time I visited the lab the refrigerator was still there, about 35 years after I placed it there and who knows how long after it was new. It was still running. It has a latching door.

I realize there are no latching doors on refrigerators but if a younger child gets in one they may not have the strength or ability to get the door open. There is a slight vacuum inside a refrigerator when closed along with the magnetic strip in the door seal. Just a safety thought I had. I have fairly broad shoulders, and was the youngest of four boys, I can take the criticism.
