Windows 10 system

A lot if hard work has been lost as a result of me not knowing what I was doing. All of the multi layer tiff files I have imported into LR using the LR import function have been flattened into a single tiff image. All layers are gone. I use the Copy mode in LR.

1. Can a tiff file containing multiple layers be imported into Lightroom Classic
2. If yes, how.

Putting your first question into Google came up with this'

"Layers. Standard TIFF doesn't support layers. If a Photoshop document with layers is saved as TIFF Photoshop creates a flat TIFF image file (for compatibility) and the layer data in a separate TIFF tag. ... ZIP usually results in smaller files, smaller even as if saved as PSD (where you can't choose the compression format)"

I can say that if I start in Lightroom, edit in Photoshop as a tiff with layers, and ctrl s, the edit ends up visible back in lightroom because it saved the tiff to the same folder as the original raw. If I want to edit it in Photoshop again I have to choose 'edit original' not 'edit with Lightroom adjustments'. I believe if you save a tiff with layers, that file will still be there with layers since Lightroom just points to that file, it doesn't alter it in any way. But if you work on it again in lightroom and then try to go to Photoshop with those edits intact it will be a flattened copy.

Bottom line, choose edit original.

LR does not support layers. This omission presents one of the limits of LR.

In my main pictures folder I have a folder called affinity for photos I might want to work on again later at some point. In Affinity , click File , save as , & direct it to this folder. When I open it in Affinity again , all the layers, etc. are still there. Then when you close the AP program, if you sent the photo from LR(edit photo in Affinity) LR(at least in LR6) it saves it to LR as a tif file.(note, all your LR sliders will be zero'd out as if you did nothing , but your original adjustments were saved in the tiff, they just don't show. I always choose edit as a copy when sending to Affinity , Topaz, etc. this way the LR copy is still there. If I feel I don't need both photos (in LR)at some point I'll get rid of 1. I keep a copy of all un-edited originals on a external drive.

1.....Quick answer, no.

A Tiff file is never in layers. If you open a file in PS, you can save it as a Psd and the layers and edits will still be there. Saveing it any other way flattens it.

?A Tiff file is never in layers?
How is that I can reopen the tiff layered file a year later an the layers are still there?

Is it because my files are saved in an external hard drive and not in a PP file?

Tiffs can indeed be in layers and can be saved in layers. They can also be saved flattened. They can be 8 bit or 16 bit (maybe 32 bit). It's up to you. I send raw from Lightroom to Photoshop as tiff, save it with layers in the same folder as the raw and it is there in lightroom next to the original.

It's not a problem, the program just does what we told it to do.
