I intend to sell my Canon 5D mark 4 and lenses, tripod and discs. I contacted MBP and they made me an offer that I think is quite low. Do any of you have any alternate suggestions as to how to proceed? Thanks in advance.

Try here under classified. Try Roberts Used Photo Pro, KEH, B&H. Remember, the vendors need a profit margin, probably at least 30%.

Thanks Ava. How do I get to it? I don't see it at the top.

You should put this on the buy and sell section.

As other have suggested try KEH and B&H. I have sold (and purchased) items from them and found them both to be honest and helpful. Selling to one of these will save you a LOT of time and frustration.

Is the price they offer lower than for you to sell it on your own? Yes, but they do most of the work, they print your shipping labels and usually cover the shipping costs. All you have to do is pack it and take it to the shipper, either Fed Ex or UPS.

If you sell these items yourself, then YOU have to do all the shipping, collect the money from various buyers while hoping they are all honest. This can take a lot of time when you factor in all the dickering that individual buyers will do when trying to purchase your items. Also, many buyers will not purchase sight unseen so you will need to set up some way to show them the items OR offer a return policy which doubles your efforts when it comes back.

I have listed and sold quite a few items by myself and it can be difficult and frustrating. People will call, tell you how much they want the item and never call back to set up a meeting. As far as payment, you are mostly stuck with Paypal or cash. Checks are risky. I once received a fake cashiers check for an item I was selling. Luckily, a teller at my local credit union spotted it. I had not shipped the item yet so nothing but a lot of time and effort was lost. Dealing directly with buyers can be an unpleasant experience. To me it is easier and more satisfying to deal with one of the big resellers.

I wish you luck.

MBP will low ball you as will B&H and others because they need to resell and make a profit.

Try here. I sold a Nikon D4 on here.

If you belong to a Nextdoor thread, you can list there. I sold a camera on there.

FB has a Marketplace that usually covers several communities in your area. I just sold an Epson 7900 on FB marketplace.

Don’t exclude eBay but that requires you ship.

Last but not least, Craigslist but be careful. A lot of trolls on there asking you to ship to their “son” for his birthday.

In all cases agree to a secure payment form.

Arthur Morris, Birds as Art, sells a lot of equipment on his site. He will provide suggestions on pricing. Charges 5%.

Adorama, B&H, KEH do this as well.
You won't get top price because you are trading convenience for price.
I know that with B&H...you will get more if you take store credit instead of cash. Others may do that as well.
You can get more on the open market...but you will likely trade time and effort to do so.

Only you can decide if the any offer is enough to let your equipment go. I found that MPB offered the most for my gear by far and frankly they made it simple and straightforward. I was delighted it was all gone immediately and their payment was wired into my bank account. The elimination of the hassle of dealing with multiple sales to individuals was worth the probably 20% reduction in what I could sell it to individuals. Remember most people will want a discount from the prices used equipment sellers like MPB charge because they provide a warranty and they have a good return policy. But then again some people enjoy the process of selling their equipment and perhaps getting more for it. Good luck!

The "low ball" prices are pretty standard for all the major "Resellers"...depending on the condition of the item... they all intend to double what they pay (otherwise why be in the business?). When I have (quite often, actually) requested quotes from (KEH, MPB, Roberts/UsedPhotoPro, Hunt's, Samy's, B&H, and others) they tend to run in the 50% range of current average market pricing for used gear. It is very similar to selling a car to a dealership, you won't get a lot, and they intend to at least double their money or better (at least that's how it was when I sold cars or a time between jobs in my real avocation), and I doubt it has changed for the better.

MY MAJOR INSTRUCTION: Stick with these reputable firms....unless you are an experienced seller...there can be many tricks and pitfalls to the used world in places like FB Marketplace, Craigslist, etc...

If the offers (from less reputable sites) seem real high, like make you giddy high, be very very careful. With the major resellers - If you overstate condition, expect them to offer lower once they see it...OTOH, they may come up some with negotiation, but if they have many copies of the same thing you are selling, don't expect a lot of negotiation power. Good luck, and choose carefully.

Sell private. It is a little more of hassle but... I got a quote like you & all the camera stores & Nikon are reselling the cameras at over 4 times what they are offering. Probably make more $ on it than they do when sold new, if it doesn't come back for a warranty. At least Nikon sells it at refurbished with a full warranty.
