We do, but you can’t get paid unless you have skill. The way I look at it photography like any skill needs to be practiced. Like an athlete you have to hone your skills on the practice field. I find trading pictures for models time very valuable. There are things I can do with a model during these shoots that I can’t do in front of a client such as trying new lighting techniques or light positions. When you are in front of a paying client you need to have your act dialed in you can’t be fumbling around trying new things. I tell the model up front I am just experimenting so I don’t know what we are going to get. I then always make sure I get some shots I know will work so they will definitely end up with something of value for their time. I want to add I always use “non-models”. The advantage is real models often know how to pose and play to the light etc. When someone asks me for a portrait shoot or head shots they have no clue usually, they also don’t have perfect features or figures that look good no matter how you shoot them, so I learn more about how to shoot different bodies and faces. So that when someone is paying me I can shoot them in the most flattering way to make them look their best.
