I need to do something. my bugs are getting red eye so to speak and I am getting shine or sheen on their hair. Do I need to scrap the flash and try something different? It is a Sunpak flash with a top mounted flash which is s selectable. this was part of the Lester Dine Dental setup. Any waxy leaves flare with the harshness of the light. I guess there is no fix for this working so close. JB
"Red eye" in humans, animals, & insects is usually caused by a point light source too close to the lens, allowing light to go straight in, illuminate the retina, and reflect straight back out, like a mirror. Most ring lights have enough distance from lens to prevent this retinal reflection.
Can you post a photo of your set-up, so we can analyze your situation?
This is the Lester Dine dental rig. the lens barrel even has a decal applied with pics of teeth with appropriate exposure settings for film. I guess I could fashion a plastic cover like the bottom of a milk container with an opening for the lens and fashion a diffusior of some type. I guess I was wondering if any others have had to deal with this problem. I have a standard flash but I have found that it has trouble shooting close in with a long lens and gets a shadow from the lens tube. JB
Try diffusing only the top-mounted flash. Try one, then two thicknesses of milk jug plastic.
Definitely see a need for a diffuser. Can you adjust the Flash compensation also? Would that help Nikonian??

I have no exposure info, which will change anyway with added diffuser. Let us wait for next image.
First rose was the ring light, no diffuser. second rose with a piece of plastic from a Chinese take out soup. kind of milky. All other shots with the top light and soup cup plastic. Bug pics will follow as I can only run 3 at a time here. Not sure but they do look better.
This is a bug with a shinny coat. It was tough getting all this in the rain but I wanted to get back to all of you. thanks for the attention to my meager offerings.
After initial three images, you can add as many images as you like, one at a time.
Use the tab "Add New Attachment" at the bottom of your post.
Well the beetle walking down the edge of the rose petal has red eye even with the plastic diffuser. I think it is all just too close to the subject.

We cannot tell, because you only posted a thumbnail image. Please check the box labeled "
(store original)".
I agree that your small diameter ringflash may be too close to your lens.
Ok, I will post the beetle corectly.

Where is the "download" version?
The last two images posted say download below the image. Having marked them with store original. JB
