I am considering the NIKON 24-70MM F/2.8 E ED AFS VR lens for my D7200. My primary use would be for landscape and family type pictures. Any advice would be appreciated.

Although the 24-70 is an excellent, professional lens, many people find the resulting field of view of 36mm on the wide end (after the crop factor) to not be wide enough for general purposes like landscape and family type pictures. Should you be considering a full-frame body for a FF lens? Or, a DX lens for a DX body?

CHG_CANON Thanks for your comments. I will look into the DX lens choices for this camera.

I found the NIKON AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-80MM F/2.8-4E ED VR. Anybody have experience with this lens.

If sticking with the D7200 (a nice camera) you might consider the Nikkor 16-80mm.

The best DX lens I've used is the Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX. This is a rather old Nikon lens and still rather expensive for new models. Consider trying to find a used one. The only drawback is the lack of VR, but the lens and images have 'character' you don't typically find in most lenses. The various Nikon DX lens in the 18-105 to 18-200 VR range is are equally sharp, so the differences are the focal length and whether a plastic or metal mount, giving slightly different prices and ruggedness.

Have a D7200, which came with a 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens, which is actually a very good DX lens. When I needed a wider angle lens for landscapes and some astrophotography, I went with a Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 DX, which is also an excellent lens. I also have the Tamron version of the lens you are looking at, a 24-70mm f/2.8 G2. It performs well on the D7200, but now you are starting to put some fairly expensive glass on a $600 body.

Amazing how quickly ads show up. I just mentioned the 16-8mm and this popped up.

Thanks Strodav. What a dilemma, upgrade lens or body, or both. $$$$

I am currently using a Tamron DiII 18-270 1:3.5-6-3
Generally like the lens, but the sharpness is lacking.

Should be 1:3.5-6.3

Pete your D7200 is an epic bit of kit.
If you are seeking the angle of view latent within an 24-70mm and a fast aperture of f.2,8 then look at the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM which has the same angle of view as the 24-70mm (actually 25-75).
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/689623-REG/Sigma_583306_17_50mm_F2_8_EX_DC.html

I have and use this epic optic to shoot events... it is absolutely stellar for the price.
Do not fall for a variable aperture zoom i.e. f 3.5-4.5 or f2.8-4 they simply can't yield the breathtaking separation of a constant f2.8

The Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 is Professional Grade DX Glass... albeit it is not as sharp in the corners as the very expensive AF-S 24-70 f/2.8 wide open however it is razor sharp at f/2.8 in the center where it counts for events... for landscapes pick up the AF-S 35mm f/1.8 or better yet the AF-S 40mm micro f/2.8 (which btw is likely the sharpest DX Nikkor)

All the best on your journey Pete and by all means keep that D7200 is an amazing camera with a full alloy body...

I have the 7200 and the above mentioned 17-55 DX lens. It,in my opinion, is a stellar lens..have used it for family and landscapes and find it outstanding..Sharp,built like a tank. Over all a great lens.. I too have the 24-70FX which again, IMO,is outstanding. Can't go wrong with either..Good luck
