Had a hitchhiker on my truck the other day. He had brilliant red wings but I couldn't catch him in flight. I know someone here at UHH will know the species.

It's a spotted lanternfly- a non-native from China. They are beautiful but very destructive as they have no natural predators here. Kill them whenever you see them to help stop their spread. They will usually jump if you try to step on them, but apparently can't jump as far each successive time, so keep trying.

Sometimes take me 3 or 4 tries to stomp them.

Wow that didn’t take long. Thanks! Is it a beetle?

They have been really bad in Berks County, PA the past few years and this year, Lebanon County is seeing a lot. My friends have a maple tree and they covered the whole trunk of the tree. My sister has killed hundreds and maybe well over a thousand by now with a fly swatter. My dad sneaks up on them from behind and uses a propane torch :)

Wow replies were quicker than most. I want to share that “There’s an App for that” I use three different ones. ‘PictureThis’ for plants, ‘Smart Identifier’ spiders, and ‘InsectIdentifier’ for other insects.

Wow. Thanks for that. I guess I just go to the ask UHH app first. Someone on here always knows. I have since looked them up and will swat them next time.

We are starting to see them in Harrisburg, Pa.. Kill them when you see them. I read that Penn State Univ. Has had success in training dogs to find their nests.

No. I saw them in Spruce Run State Park in central NJ. Then again a mile or so down the road.

It is a member of the Hemiptera, not a beetle.
