For my Pentax K-r I use a TicTac container to carry a spare. I use a Dove deodorant travel size (.5 oz.) container to carry a spare for my Pentax K-3 - just washed it up real well and removed that "stem" on the inside, didn't even have to remove the wheel from the bottom.

many camera straps have a little Velcro pouch for batteries and cards. I use that or throw them in my pocket .. Or I put them in the little tray in the car , then forget them and have to walk back for them.

I'm telling' you, even if they were oriented with both sets of contacts in the same direction, they'd never touch. Look closely at the batteries, the contacts are recessed. There's no way for them to touch, they're made to be completely "stupid proof."

DJBAD is referencing a battery orientation (in a pouch/container) for fresh vs. used, nothing to do with the contacts touching anything.
I do the same thing, contacts down in the pouch for fresh, up for spent.

I keep them secured in the Nikon Battery holders that come with the spare batteries.

I've been messing with lipo and lion for a long long time, I promise you that regardless of how safe and secure, hidden, recessed, etc. etc. the contacts look, something can and will make them touch together at the most in-oppertune time, like in your pants pocket.....trust me on this....I've seen it happen too many times!! When using something that can potentially explode into flames, USE PROTECTION!!

Not to keep them from touching, so you know which are fresh.

The "biggie" is an add-on that attaches to the bottom of the camera. You can either have a number of AA cells or a special holder that inserts into the "biggie." The camera can be set up to use the "biggie" first or the on-board battery in the camera first.
You can get quite a few shots with this combo and the switch-over is pretty transparent - done inside the camera's software. This is handy especially when you are doing wedding shots or family shots where you don't want to be distracted with changing batteries - plus you don't miss that "money shot" while changing batteries.

I have something like that for my camera, but it's called a battery grip, which can also use AA batteries.
Is the biggie a different device?

Yeah dude, the "biggie" is a battery grip, very handy and I have one that fits both my D300s and the D700. Can be a bit large that way though.

I keep the spare batteries covered in plastic in some sort of pouch along with spare memory card and lens cloth, when I go with only one lens the one little pouch goes in a pocket , grab and go, all in!

Gaffer tape. Can cover battery contacts and has a variety of uses and removes without residue and can be reused.
