I am thinking about doing some trading and getting one of these lenses. I've read a lot of reviews and it seems to be a very capable lens. Does anyone have one or any comments about his lens? Thanks. It will be a new lens. To be used with a Canon 6D Mark ll or a 90D.

Sigma offers a 100-400mm zoom lens. I have one mounted to my Canon 6D Mark II. This combination produces fine images. Note that the Sigma lens is physically smaller than the Canon version.

I use a Canon 100-400 zoom lens it is the mark 1 version I have used it in a Canon 50 D and now on a Canon m50 with an adaptor. The problem with lenses not made by the camera manufacturer they have to be reverse engineered and in my opinion never as good as the Canon, Nikon, Sony or Fuji product

I had version I of the lens for years and loved it. About 1.5 years ago I upgraded to version II and find it to be significantly better. As for sharpness only my 100/2.8L macro and 300/2.8L IS II are sharper (out of 10 lenses, five of which are L series). For close focusing only my 100/2.8L macro does better. Only the 300/2.8L focuses much faster. It works well with the 1.4X III teleconverter, although I lose most of the focus points. It is big and heavy, but not too bad in either case; much smaller than the 300/2.8. In all it is one of my favorite lenses; the only one I use more is the 24-105L.

It's a great lens. The zoom covers a great range, easily replacing any 70-200 f/4 zoom or any version of 70-300. For the newest EOS bodies, adding the 1.4x can autofocus at f/8 and multiple bodies can now use AF points across the entire frame, not just the center.
It's bigger and heavier than other options. I take those other options when I won't need the heft of the 100-400L. No one would complain about the image quality of the extended 1.4x, but if you have L-primes that take you above 400mm, the primes are sharper, even with the same 1.4x and 2x EF extenders.
My 2019 year-end review of my lens usage trends had the 100-400L II as a candidate for swapping out. Here's an image from some mid-2020 usage taking that swap-out idea off the table:

I had the first edition (bought from a Hogger) and traded it for a mk2. I use it on my 7DII for hand held going after birds etc. (with a pistol grip). I have also used it on a 5DIV, 6D and 80D also. I haven't used it on my 90D yet.
It is fast focusing and gives excellent IQ. I often use it with a 1.4x III extender.
Two images, #1 without extender at 400 mm on my 5DIV and #2 with extender at 560 mm on my 7DII.
Also it focuses so close I often do insects etc with it instead of a macro.

It is brilliant! I love mine and it is bright, sharp and can triple as a portrait and macro lens, albeit from a distance

I've been having trouble keeping on my subject when hand holding. Can you tell me a little about this pistol grip and do they work well.

I find they work great, I have the cheap ones that are a grip only but a couple of companies make ones with a cable and trigger for shutter release. You don't have to twist your arm and wrist into a pretzel to hold the camera - I hold with my left and do everything else with my right.

#1 7DII with pistol grip screwed on the tripod foot and a Red Dot Sight on the Hot Shoe for finding and tracking subjects.
#2 7dII with pistol grip plus a splitter so it has a flash and Red Dot
Now weight and movement will twist and unscrew/loosen it but it didn't take me long to get in the the habit of checking/tightening the thumb wheel frequently - and I keep the strap around my neck.

I shot with the mk 1 version of this lens on my 6D for several years and liked it so much that when I recently bought the canon R6 I sold the lens to mpb.com and bought the mk II version. If focuses closer and faster and has better image stabilization. Also I bought my lens new from the link below at "street price" which ended up coming from an authorized canon dealer in Canada (not grey market). Saved me a lot of money and very smooth transaction!
