I've had the D7200 and a Nikon 17-55 f2.8 lens lived on it. Same lens was also used on my d80, d300, d7000. Sold all crop frame equipment then several years later picked up a d500 used at a great price. Got a 17-55 f2.8 on Amazon for $420. D500 and 17-55 is the best walk around combination available. Add a 70-200 f2.8 and don't look back. D7200 is every bit as good as the d500 in most cases.
I have the same lens, and have used it for a few years (very useful). With no problem on various Nikon bodies, no problem. maybe yours is defective. A trip to your local Nikon dealer and check out another one and compare.

I currently am using a Nikon D7200 and I love it. I have a lens that I am less than thrilled with though. It is a NFS NIKKOR 24-85 1:3.5-4.5G. The problem is that it doesn't focus smoothly manually. It is jerky as I twist the focus ring. Sometimes I like to zoom the focus during the exposure to create an interesting effect. I can't do that with this lens because it is not smooth. I would like some suggestions for a lens to replace this lens. I can't afford a top notch lens but I can afford a middle of the road lens, as long as it is sharp. I am open to good used lenses. Any ideas are welcome. Also ideas on where I can find a good used lens.

Off to a Nikon store to try them out!
Cheers!
My mistake. What I was trying to say is that I like to zoom during exposure sometimes for a creative effect. But the focus on this lens is also jerky and hard to fine focus manually.
What a thoughtful response. Thank you so much for taking the time to respond. I apologize for taking so long to get back to you. I put the project down for a while butt now I want to start looking for another lens since I am getting ready to take a nice trip out west.
