I just purchased a new Nikon D6 from our local camera shop. When I got it home and the battery charged I put the lens on and snapped a few shots. The shutter sounded like a jackhammer on each actuation. Sounded the same in “quite mode” as well. I sent it to Nikon Repair and today they called and said the shutter noise was within specs and normal. I had several Nikon cameras including the D3,D500, D750, D7200 and none of these cameras have a noisy shutter. Has anyone had this issue with the D6? If so was it resolved?
Thank you,

Maybe you should have first taken it back to the camera shop and measured the sound against other D6 bodies. Then you could have kept or returned it. Would have saved you time and effort. Have you gone back to listen to other D6 bodies at that camera shop or gone to ask them what they think about the sound?

If it is within your 30 day of purchase and bought it from B&H you can return it and hope your new copy is quieter.

The camera shop Procam in Livonia Michigan only had one D6.
At the time B&H didn’t have any in stock

Do they have a 30 day return?

Dude, I love the sound of the Nikon DSLR shutter. You should hear the D850s.

I have (and have had) a number of Nikon DSLRs. I have found that their shutters tend to follow fairly characteristic patterns. Some of it seems to be related to the shutter speed capability, some to the shutter durability (design life) and some to nothing specific in particular. But the D500 has a quick, crisp shutter. The D810 has a muffled. quiet shutter, and the D850 has a very solid sounding shutter. Both of my D500s sound identical, but neither sounds like my old D300.

As I recall, the "quiet" shutter is part of the live view on my D5. I don't use live view much but when you turn it to live view the mirror is raised. After that you get the noise of the mechanical shutter, which is not as loud as the mirror slap.

My D5 also has a "silent" mode which is truly silent. When I tried it for the first time I thought it wasn't working until I saw the green light on the back flashing. It basically takes single frames at a movie rate. You get way too many shots when you use it unless you develop a technique for squeezing off just a few. On the D5, the silent mode gives you jpg only (no raw available) and it's not a full size jpg. (It uses the full frame but the image dimensions are significantly less than a still taken in the normal mode).

I don't have a D6 (and no plans to get one) but I would expect it would be similar to the D5 (although it has a slightly higher frame rate).

Looking at the other cameras you have the D6 is your first Pro Body. Not too long ago I purchased a very experienced D4. Shutter count was 320k when I bought it and it is going strong. Seems like it has a noiser shutter. Just Heavy Duty.

You think you have a load shutter, the king of shutter noise is the Nikon D850, I own and shoot the D5, and it is quite by comparison.
Quite mode is misleading on a mirrored camera, if the mirror goes up and down, it is going to make noise.
Your current camera's are also on the Nikon quite list.
Let's put it another way, learn to sneak up on your wildlife, cause when you open up the shutter, any wildlife within a 100 yards is going to know exactly where you are.

I have lost some of my auditory acuity. All Nikon D cameras sound the same.

I was about to say that I love shooting my D500 because the shutter sounds so much better than my D850. Can't help you with the D6, don't have one, never even seen one.

Try the shutter in Live View.

Does anyone besides myself hear the annoying shutters going off at say, a presidential news conference or what have you. They must all be D6's (little sarchasm on that last comment). They should ban such noisy cameras. Seriously, that could be a big problem taking nature shots.

Good luck on that problem and I think Nikon blew you off especially if the quiet mode was as loud as the regular shutter sound mode.

Good luck
