This is a great video on how shutters work in DSL cameras with mechanical shutters.
It was filled at 10,000 frames per second.

That was fun to watch. As a young teenager learning photography, I use to take the lens off my Pentax and go thru the shutter speeds.

It's a great explanation of first and second curtain. If only he threw in how flash speed and shutter speed and shutter location are related.

For focal plane shutters, one’s initial expectation is that as the shortness of exposure increases, the shutter’s speed of motion increases also. It would be interesting to see a leaf shutter filmed in the same way to contrast their operation with a focal plane shutter.

I was struck by the amount of bounce in the mirror on both the upswing and downswing, as well as shutter bounce at the end of its travel.
