I spent a week working in Lake Charles, LA, helping to clean up the mess from the double whammy hurricanes that hit that town and the surrounds. If you have never been to a site like this (like me), you should go. The devastation and heartache are almost unbearable. We cut up beautiful trees that had fallen. Huge, 100-year-old oaks and pines, even one enormous magnolia tree. We gutted houses and prepped them for reconstruction. It was HARD work - all day, every day. I'm still pretty exhausted!

God bless you, Kathy, and the other people for your hard, noble job.Thank you so much!

I worked with Churches of Christ Disaster Response Team. They work out of a church building. We slept in classrooms on air mattresses (or in my case, a cot). They provide all meals and the cooking was superb!

Thanks, Sam. I wish 1000's more would drop in on that town. They need so much help.

Great of you to volunteer, Kathy. Tough sights to see, let alone live through.

Thanks, John. It was tough to see. I cannot imagine living through it.

I went with an acquaintance's church group several years ago to Hull, IL to help when the Mississippi flooded -worked on gutting houses of carpeting, drywall, etc, It was an unforgettable experience seeing nothing but rooftops and a disappearing road on TV is one thing, but in person.... The smell was also something , um, unique.

You're so right about the smell. It's hard to deal with sometimes. It is an experience that stays with one. So glad you did that.

There is so much devastation beyond the houses and trees. I think it’s wonderful that people like you are able to go and help. I’m sure it is a great emotional support to the victims.

You are so correct, Carol. I look at all those piles and I see people's lives going to the trash.

I think most of the people were actually gone. Some stayed. One of the trees we cleaned up had fallen so hard that its branches made huge, deep holes in the yard. It shows us just how strong the roof structure is on the house to have a tree blown onto it and not come crashing down. There were some buildings that the trees simply did crash through or knock down. There was a literal army of volunteers from many groups there. Unfortunately, not enough to get all the work done.
