When I was a sophomore in h.s., Cassius Clay, as he was known then, was in his early career. He was exciting. Man, could he dance. Opponents didn't know what to make of it and just stood back and watched, only to be struck by an Ali right when he was done dancing!!! Amazingly, his fights were shown on t.v., mainly on Wide World of Sports. I can remember getting home from a J.V. baseball game (away game) just in time to see one of his fights. He was brash and certainly backed up everything he said. It would have been very interesting to see Clay/Ali and Liston really go at it and not have Liston tank the fight. Liston was scary.

Liston thought Ali was insane and was terrified of him for that reason.

What? That could make him box better? Did you see what Liston did to Patterson? I don't think insanity would have helped anybody in fighting Liston. It would take superior boxing skills. As good as Clay/Ali was, was he there yet? Don't know. It would have been interesting to find out.

Crazy in that he would have charged in like a cross between the Charge of the Light Brigade and a Kamikaze but in a hit and run fashion.
No give, no real retreat, just a victory or death kind of fight and being younger if he could have avoided being knocked out he could have out lasted Listen by just plain never quitting.

Liston was scared of him enough to try to fix the fight by having ligament put on Ali's towel in his corner which got in his eyes.

Clay lived inside Liston's head rent free.

I think Ali would have just worn Liston out...maybe a late round KO.

Boxing is not worth the price the boxer has to pay. IMO.

1928: My father was born in Greenpoint Brooklyn at a midwife's house to two European immigrants(1 legal, the other not). A year later, black Tuesday. What a start to a long and happy 90 years.

If Ali was able to avoid Liston's best punches. Ali never really had been hit. We know the toll Smokin' Joe took on him. Liston could have done the same. Joe was just a lot smarter than Liston.

You’re right about Frazier being a lot smarter. I was in my teens when Cassius Clay came along and my Dad was a big boxing fan. He didn’t like Clay at all but he knew he was good. Frazier and Ali put on some great bouts.
