Husavik at Skjalfandi bay is an important northern town with 2,300 inhabitants. The most famous landmark of the town is the wooden church Husavikkurkirkja, built in 1907. It has a active fishing industry and has become a centre of whale watching in Iceland due to whales of different species that frequently enter the bay. Income is mainly derived from fishing and tourism. Husavík was the first place in Iceland to be settled by a Norse man. The Swedish Viking Gardar Svavarsson stayed there for one winter around 870 A.D. When he left the island in spring of 870, after a winter's stay, he left behind a man named Nattfari and two slaves, a man and a woman, and they established a farm here. The name of the town means "bay of houses", probably referring to Gardar's homestead, which may have been the only houses then in Iceland.

This might be a good time for the active participants in this tour to consult the map to better understand where we are at. If you plan to do so, please click on the first link below. We are now at the uppermost northeastern section of the trip and of the country, having just visited the Namafjall Geothermal area and are about to enter Husavik, followed by reaching our northernmost position in Iceland before dropping down to the mystical area of Asbyrgi.

In this set, we will see a few buildings in the town of Husavik and mainly concentrate on its active, colorful harbor.

Thank you Barbara, I have always loved reflections, so shoot them whenever I see them. It would be interesting to go on a little cruise with Hildur. Have a great day - Joe

I am about half-way through the tour, so if you have not see the earlier ones and if you are interested to see more of Iceland, please have a look at the earlier posts by following the second link in the opening text. I will go on for about another 3 weeks, so more (at least to me) exciting places coming up! Enjoy a wonderful day - Joe.

Beautiful renderings of excellent captures as usual. Looks as though a couple of the boats in the harbour are used for sealing as well (the crow's nests give them away), since whaling is now no longer permitted. All this beauty accompanied, as usual, with an interesting narrative. Please stay well and keep on posting.

Thank you Ours. You know more about boats than I do as I would not have spotted the crow's nests and known of the implications - thanks for updating me. But I am not aware that it is no longer permitted to do whaling in Iceland. I know that they have not done any whaling in the last couple of years, but from what I understand, the industry basically is still alive, though less and less individuals seem to be interested in consuming whale meat in Iceland. Thanks for looking in. Joe
