Actually, the weight of the lens, which is driven by the format, the speed and zoom vs prime is the driving factor, not DSLR vs MILC.

They are all a factor, but yes a f16-80 2.8-4.0plus a 70-200 F2.8 AFS vs an 18-200 3.5-5.6 AFS will offset more weight than most any difference in bodies.

Thanks. I will definitely look into the 3000 and 5000 series Nikons. There is a camera shop in Manchester, not too far from me. When I lived in NY B&H was where I went for info and cameras. Now I call or go on line.

Tina if you're referring to Hunts in Manchester, and haven't been yet, it's pretty small and not a lot of product to see and handle. The Hunts in Melrose has evvvvvverything. I have a D7100 with Nikons 18-140 lens. It sits on my shelf since I bought a Fuji X-T2. My first outing was at a zoo, and after walking around all afternoon, I had forgotten it was around my neck. Love it. I bought their 18-135 lens as it covers so much. Many large controls right on the top of the camera and not the menu. They came out with an X-T3 and 4 since, but the X-T2 would be a bargain and a good choice.
That camera shop is about a half hour away for me.

The RX10MlV is a mirrorless camera but it has a fixed lens not removable. This is the only advantage.

Keep in mind that the D3000 and D5000-series Nikons can only autofocus AF-S and AF-P lenses (full compatibility with the latter only the later cameras, D3300 onward).

If you have any "AF" lenses, they will be manual focus only on a D3000/5000-series camera.

You also may want to look at the Nikon Z50... it has essentially the same crop sensor as your D7100, but is a mirrorless and will weigh less.

Approx. weights:

D7100.... 685 grams
D5600.... 465 grams
Z50........ 395 grams
D3500.... 365 grams

All are 24MP cameras. The AF systems are quite different. The Z50 probably has the most advanced, followed by your D7100's, then the D5600's, then the simplest in the D3500. But for what you say you like to shoot, all these will probably be fine. A higher performance AF system is most important for action photography such as sports and wildlife. Buildings, landscapes and portraits aren't nearly as demanding.

Keep other stuff in mind: The Z50 gets far fewer shots per battery charge (like most mirrorless, because their electronic viewfinder draws a lot of power). As a result, you may end up carrying more spare batteries with it. The D5600 and D3500 also use a battery that's smaller than your D7100's. That may also give less shots per charge (check the specs). Also, the Z50 uses the new bayonet mount, so to use existing F-mount lenses you'll need an adapter, which adds some weight to the lens.

AFAIK, you can't buy the D3500 without a lens. I don't see it advertised "body only" anywhere. It always comes with at least an 18-55mm. The other cameras can be bought body only or with a kit lens.

You might also be able to save some weight changing out some lenses that you use, too.

A Zeiss 600mm lens with a low f stop 2.4 - 4 @ 600. Along with 13 elements in the lens for better focus. Can your Nikon lenses match that lens and you only have to use one set of filters not three or more sets plus a large camera bag for all the extra lenses you want to carry.

Tina.… I am guessing that the camera shop in Manchester NH near you is Hunt’s. They are excellent and very helpful and will steer you in the right direction. My first Nikon DSLR was the D5000. I moved up to the D7100. For lighter I’d go with one of the upper level 5000s (referred to as the 5XXX’s). One great zoom that works with the upper level 5XXXs as well as your 7100 is Nikon’s 10-20 wide angle zoom— sharp, LIGHT and relatively inexpensive.

You're wrong. It has too many advantages to list. It's one of the best if not the best bridge camera available.

I just bought a Canon RP with 24-105 STM lens for $999. Super deal off Canon website, could not pass up.

If you change formats, I recommend the m4/3 cameras and lenses.

Try a Nikon Z50 mirrorless with the 2 kit lens (16-50mm & 50-200mm). runs about $1100 for the camera & both lens - Nice little DX Camera and a heck of a lot lighter. It's an entry level camera with lots of nice features. Look up Ken Rockwell and look for his review. He is NOT a Nikon fan anymore but seems to love this light weight do almost everything camera

Bought this for my 86 year old dad who suffered nerve damage that causes problems with his left shoulder. He is out shooting again. Something he hasn't done for 2 years.

Lok at the Sony 6XXX series. Lightweight and they have been around long enough to have many devotees.

I left Nikon as I felt I needed a Sherpa to haul lens camera and flash. Plus I like to be discreet and not “ out there” with all the gear.
So I started with Fuji XPRO1. Felt like the old film days
Then traded for Fuji XT 3
Smaller camera and lens. Film simulation options are outstanding. Couldn’t be more pleased.

That is why l put my Sony a99ii to sleep along with all the lenses and brought the Sony RM10MIV. The ultimate bridge camera. All l have to bring is an external HVF60 Flash, shotgun microphone, 3 piece Hoya filters and a tripod. Total weight around 18lbs.
