yet another SD card question

This is a simple one I would appreciate having cleared up.
I have purchased 2 Sandisk Ultra microSDHC cards, 32G each.
I understand that I need to format the cards in-camera (not the legal term!).

Now, I have 2 cameras.
When I format Card 1 in my 5D, does that card need to remain with the 5D
OR
will it be interchangeable with Card 2 which I will format in my 7D?
Do the cards have to remain with the camera they were formatted in (they are backup cards)
Thank you.

I don't use Nikon but I would guess that the format on both cards would be the same However you might have a problem if you switch a card with photos from one camera to another. I'm not sure. You might try the switch with files on both SD cards and see.

Although not recommended (by manufacturer or a majority of people here and other sites), Canon may or may not have issues with the file naming. There are many factors that could lead one or both cameras reading a file from the other and reset the incremental image count (not shutter count) of the last image on the card.

This is all theoretical and may or may not happen. If, for instance, you created a directory "001" on your SD while it was in the 5D and set all pictures taken to go to that directory. And in your 7D, created a directory "002" and had all photos taken in that camera to go to that directory, there is a good possibility that there would be no conflicts.

I have moved cards (without video or image files) between my T7i and 5D with no issues, although I try not to make a habit of it. The Canon directory structure is already there and if a custom folder ("001","002") isn't there when the card is inserted, the firmware retains that custom made preset and writes it to the card.

I myself would format one in each camera (without taking any pictures) then compare them in Windows Explorer to see if there is a different file structure or files on either.
If they look identical, they should be okay in either camera.
The only question that would remain would be if images on card A from camera A would be visible in camera B upon review, and vice-versa. Experimenting would answer that question.

There could be file contention problems though if the cameras each want to save the same named file. I don't know how Canon would handle that.
(I put mine back in the camera with no images remaining on them.)

Try it...

I have two Canon Cameras. I do a Low Level Format of my SD cards in either camera and use them in either camera. No problem.

I'd recommend that whenever you place one of those cards into a camera, reformat it in the camera.

Two comments:

1) Go into the menus for both advanced EOS bodies and assure they create unique file names. You might find only the 7D has this feature, say to add '7D' as a prefix to the #### counter (or E7D).

2) My experience of sharing cards between cameras of the same brand is the sequence counter jumps if you don't reformat the card in the camera. Consider if that's important to your tracking needs.

Despite the likelihood that they would work when interchanged, never do that because of the effect on the file number sequencing. Cards are cheap, so you should never even need to ask such a question in the first place.

If the cards have no images on them when they are re-inserted in the camera, won't the camera use the next in the sequence it has in the camera? If no pictures are on the card, how would that have an affect on the sequence?
I erase all files on the card(s) and the camera uses the next number in line. The camera remembers the last number it assigned.

Yes, that would be no problem. But the opening post seems to indicate routine interchange of a card already containing image files.

It’s all in how you read into the OP post.
And further, it shouldn’t matter how one reads it. Cards are way too cheap to be swapping them from camera to camera.

"Seems to indicate"... We both are guessing what/how he intends to work with the cards.

"Use the card" does not describe OR imply how (methodology) it will be used.

Agreed. I have ten cards and will NOT fill them all up in one day.
However, once emptied, I'd like NOT to have specific cards assigned to a specific camera.
I just want to be able to stuff a card in the camera.
Ergo, interchangeable.
(Odds are that the same card will go back in the same camera.)

Yup. But at the low cost of cards it really doesn’t matter what he means. Just buy enough cards to fill every slot and he can sleep better.
