Back in high school chemistry, myself and my lab partner were tasked with giving the class a demonstration on thermite. I remember using powdered aluminum as a component. To ignite the process we used a section on magnesium ribbon. We did the demonstration out if the school parking lot. It was pretty spectacular.
I'm surprised a teacher would have you use that stuff. The parking lot was a good choice for a location.
