Quick question: for my nikon set, I have 14-24, & 24-70 and I am missing this 70-200 to complete the trinity. Do you folks use this lens a lot? Is there a need/ use to get this? My to go lens is 24-70 f2.8. It's very expensive. Appreciate your thoughts.

I use my 70-200 a lot, much more than my 14-24 and almost as much as my 24-70.

I used for a long time 70-300 VR 5.6. When I got 70-200 2.8 used-I thought it was to heavy...... I got to Jason Odell birding lesson and that changed my mind about this lens. None of my other lenses can’t keep up.

I have one I don’t use it a lot. I use the 24-70 a lot more. But that is me, I’m not you.

Should you get it? I think it depends on what you like to shoot. Do you find yourself at the long end of 70 a lot wishing you had more?

In the end only you, yourself, know the answer to your question. It all depends on what you like to do with your photography. Here's a question to ask yourself: Do you find that you crop a lot of your images to make the subject larger? If that's the case then a longer focal length lens will certainly be useful. There are also other benefits to having that particular lens. It is one of the best Nikon lenses out there. Very sharp, great colors, fast focus, etc.. I sometimes even use mine for landscape, flower shots and candid shots of people.

I bought the 80-200 F2.8, It's pretty much my go to lens when I'm not shooting birds.

Jbravi if you client work involves shooting events, it is worth your investment.
However if you simply want a longer focal length then the AF 180mm f/2.8 is a wise and cost effective solution.

I have and use both these optics and they are each stellar for their intended use.

Below please find examples of both the AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8 IF ED VRII and the AF 180mm f/2.8D in actual use... Both being deployed under rather challenging conditions... Both preformed beyond expectations...

Hope this helps Jbravi

Of course it depends on what you shoot. I have the Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 G2 version and it rarely comes off of my D850. It's a very versatile lens. When it does come off, it's usually for the Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 G2. You might want to look at a 1.4x or even a 1.7x teleconverter to give you a bit more reach when you need it.

I try to buy used when I can and the first place I look for a new lens is at KEH.com. They thoroughly check what they sell and their grading system is excellent. They have a 14 day no questions asked return policy.

The Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 FL is one of my most used lenses. The FL version is the one you want not the older VR ii.

The 70-200 f/2.8 VRii is probably one of the finest lenses made. It is extremely accurate in rendering subject material, and it has some nice operating features.. It is, however, quite heavy. Someone has already asked whether you feel that you need a longer lens. If so, this is certainly one to consider. It doesn't come with any sort of magic powder or potion to solve photographic problems, but if you would like to be able to magnify your composed images by up to 3x over what you can do with your 24-70, it is an excellent way to accomplish that. It is a serious lens, though, well worth its price if you are OK carrying it around and working with it.

Of the Trinity, 70-200 ƒ2.8 is probably used the most of the 3, mostly on outdoor sports portraits.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to pull the trigger and buy a Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8E FL today. I rented one and was amazed with the quick, tack sharp acquisition, which I more or less expected. They're on sale for $1899.00 until 3/1/2020. I'll be using it on my D7200. I know wrong format, but I was able to acquire the sharp detail that has eluded my attempts with other lenses, both Nikon and a couple of Sigmas. And, of course,
the bokeh is killer as well. I'm going to sell my Sigma 85mm f/1.4 and a Fender Stratocaster to defray the cost. Oh, and yeah, it's heavy and I just turned 71. Gotta pull out my Silver Sneakers card and hit the gym.
