I got an ad from Zippo lighters. They have a large collection of lighters for Halloween. I don't know what the smoking situation is like now, but I see very few people smoking. That's got to impact Zippo. On the other hand, I've been accumulating Zippo lighters for years. I wouldn't say I'm a collector, but when I see one that's relevant, I buy it. I haven't seen one with a ukulele design, though.

Jerry said in part: large collection of lighters for Halloween. yes Jerry, they are handy for burning building... a favorite pass time for many goblins during Halloween when i lived in Detroit.

"Devil's Night is a name associated with October 30, the night before Halloween. It is related to the "Mischief Night" ... chiefly associated with the serious vandalism and arson seen in Detroit, Michigan, from the 1970s to the 1990s"
Prompted a song in "Song of the South." It was sung by Uncle Remus by Disney studios... " Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah Zip-ya" .. [Free advertising for Zippo Lighters??? ] Removed later because of implied racism, Aunt Jemima and Uncle Remus were not married and there was a scandal when Uncle Ben got involved!!!

In 1946 I was 10 and did not realize that it was a scandal!!! Alas, Jerry history changes things.. the song was removed quietly according to FOX news.

Originally, it was "Zippo-dee-do-dah," but Zippo made them change it.

I have never smoked (well one partial cigarette and it got tossed in a rice paddy). But have carried matches or a lighter (now I keep one in the car) since about 1960. You never know when you might want/need to start a fire. My fishing buddy and I in high school carried salt, pepper and matches when we went fishing in the farm ponds in the area. If they were biting we just built a camp fire and cooked a fish or two over it so we didn't have to walk to one of our houses for lunch. I do have a zippo in a fishing tackle box and a can of fluid for it.

If I remember rightly those deft enough, could do a double clip of thumb and finger that opened the lid and then lit it up.

I have a Zippo that I bought during basic training in 1961. It still works great. Since I don't smoke it hardly gets used.

b Jerry said in part: large collection of lighter... (show quote)

Song of the South was my favorite of all the Disney feature length cartoons. In my child's mind I loved Uncle Remus and wished that even one of my multitude of uncles was like him. Children, unless indoctrinated, neither see nor feel racism. I think my mother grew weary reading the Golden Book version as it was one that I requested at least once a week. Only adult thinking seems to muck things up.

Of course one handed - it was required skill when I was in the military.

The days between Oct 30 to Nov 1 are dedicated to the Dead. Allhalowtide: Oct 31 All Saints Eve, Nov 1 All Saints Day, Nov 2 All Souls Day. Wikipedia has several articles about this period.
