I would try to determine whether the softness was caused directly by the glass or if the polarizer was affecting the autofocus. Try focusing in live view and check to see if it’s still soft.

Why am I dumb enough to always assume users have already tended to all such narrowing down of the variables ...

There are two types of polarizers. Iinier & circular. Circular is the one to get. You rotate the filter to increase or decrease the intencity of the scene.

That is 100% misinformation.

Just ignore it. Details easily found elsewhere.

I use B+W Nano-coated and Marumi DHG filters. They are superb.

I use B+W in 62mm for my Tamron 70-300 then two step down adapters to 58mm & 52mm.

The only way you can mount a 62mm filter on a lens with 52 or 58mm threads is with step-up rings. Step down rings are used to mount a smaller filter on a lens with larger threads.
An easy way to tell which ring is which:
Male threads larger than female threads - Step down ring.
Male threads smaller than female threads - Step up ring.
