Photoshop sky replacement, like HDR, is best when you can't' tell it's been done.
oh that's easy, change a parking lot to a lake with a reflection on the surface. And yes I have fooled the hogs around here.

It's also great when it can be used in that way to replace skies that you've blown out.

Yes it's good if it doesn't look like a replacement, that's my thing here.

Yesterday the thought came to me that I believe the reason many have a negative opinion of sky replacement is the desire of many to add dramatic skies. I've taken many pictures of blue skies with different cloud formations to be used in my images that were taken on dreary gray sky days. The images of mine with added skies look natural to me. If it doesn't look natural I revert back to the original.
So, that beautiful ocean sunrise shouldn't be placed behind a night city-scape that shows streets with car light streaks?? Say it ain't so!

Post processing is best when you can't tell it's been done.

That's the same with ANY editing, removal or replacement.

Retouching in general is best when you can't' tell it's been done. In fact I will go farther and say that if you can tell it had been retouched for whatever reason, then the retouching has failed.
Less is better when it comes to retouching.

Did you include the reflection of the bottom of the cars on the lake? Now that would be funny!
I have been mostly HDR for 10+ years and love Photomatix. They it hey have free trials. I just got back from a shoot with over 100 pictures set it up on batch fix and walked away for dinner, cam back and reviewed them all.

Sky replacement, HDR, retouching...
it's all best when you like the final result. One man's meat is another man's poison.

Photoshop and Lightroom i have never been keen and use Coral Printshop Pro Ultimate the latest version has A1 capability in it and it is a good set of programs. I also use Canon DPP program which is Alaska an excellent program.
For those with Nikon kit, Nikon do a similar program to Canon
