Hey, Jerry, did you get this joke from Arte Johnson and Ruth Buzzi of Laugh-In? I can see the old lady (Ruth Buzzi) smack the elderly man (Arte Johnson) with her purse.
BTW, why is it an "old lady" and an "elderly man"? Sounds kind of sexist to me. How about instead it's a senior lady and an old goat?

I could understand being released from prison for murdering the Wardens mother in law,
but where I come from, you'd get locked up for murdering your wife.

As for "old" and "elderly," that's how the joke was written, but it was probably done for variation. Besides, I doubt a senior lady would be interested in old barn animals.
