Hi Sam, yes I do have blue eyes but neither my mother or father had blue eyes.
No thanks your parents had heterozygous genes for eye color. They both have one dominant brown gene (color pigment) and one recessive gene (no color therefore blue) The dominant masks the recessive gene. If your Daddy threw the recessive, and so did your Mama, then you got the homozygous recessive (2 recessive genes) which means yours will be blue. 25% chance of that happening!
I heard that there is an almost certainty that if you have an European background, you have Charlemagne in your family tree. I have seen some "sketchy" genealogies purporting to go back to Adam and Eve, both said to have lived "easterly in Eden".
Some of you may remember a rather common exchange where a brown eyed person would be accuse of being so full of "it " that "...your eyes are brown". If the other fellow said that he wasn't because his eyes were blue, the immediate comeback was "Well, you're just a quart low".

If both of your parents carried the recessive gene for blue eyes and each passed that recessive gene to you, you would have the two genes for blue eyes and none for the dominant gene of brown eyes. This is how recessive genes can be passed on for generations and never appear.
