I have a Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm 1:1.8 D with a lens hood that came with it. If I put on any kind of filter whether a UV or polarizer and then try re-attach the lens hood it will not go on no matter what I try. It's frustrating.

Is that the screw on rubber collapsible hood? Are you using screw on filters? Are you saying it won’t screw in to the filter threads?

I have that lens, but not a lens hood for it. Is the hood a screw on type? If so, it may be blocked by the filter from screwing on. That’s just a guess.

Don’t the Screw on filters have screw on the front for screwing on more filters? I’m going to look at one of mine. .... Ok I just looked at 8 screw on filters. Every one of them has screw threads on both sides to facilitate stacking filters.

Maybe she is using a square filter.

Typically, the Nikon lens hoods are not threaded. They have something akin to a bayonet mount that seats on the barrel of the lens. A quarter turn locks the hood into place. I have screw on filters on all of my Nikon and Sigma lenses and the respective lens hoods go on to the barrel of the lens with no problem.

Is the hood a Nikon OEM device?

The Nikkor 50mm f1.8 lens has a different hood from most Nikon mounts. The only one I have seen for that lens is a screw on collapsible lens hood. Maybe there are others but I haven’t seen them.

You are right, if it is a screw on hood it should be able to screw on to the filters.

I think the bayonet hoods came later. None of my AI, AIs, or AF lenses take a bayonet hood, only the AF-S lenses.

Haren, can you upload a photo of the lens hood? If it has any markings on it, try to include those markings in the photo.

Haren, a quick search of the Nikon website shows only an HR-2 52mm rubber screw-in lens hood and it's currently unavailable. Is that the hood you have? Check to see if it will thread onto the lens without a filter attached. If not, maybe the threads on the hood are damaged. If so, B&H (bhphotovideo.com) lists a new HR-2 for $16.95 and Amazon has generic collapsible rubber lens hoods for much less.

Oops, the Nikon HR-2 is back-ordered at B&H. But they have a Vello HR-2 in stock for $9.95. Just something to consider.

I have a couple of each, they wear out over time. I prefer the Nikon version, the threads seem to fit a little better, but the aftermarket one works just as well.

Do a quick check to make sure your filter has threads on the front. Then carefully screw on your hood. Note that these are very easy to "cross thread" if they aren't lined up just right. The easy way to make sure everything is lined up correctly is to lay your camera on its back, make sure the filter is on straight, then carefully add the hood. Lay it on the filter, gently turn it backward a little over one turn, then gently spin it clockwise until it is gently secured. If that doesn't work, put the hood on first, then gently add the filter to the front of the hood.

If the filter is the right size, the threads should all be compatible. There is also a possibility that one or both of the sets of threads that won't mesh might be damaged.

The correct hood is the Nikon HR-2. It will screw into any female 52x0.75 thread. Some thin polarisers may not have a female thread.
