Interesting. I guess it only takes a few minutes to cross? How much does the ferry cost?

You mean that you never saw the movie, The Outlaw Josey Wales, starring Clint Eastwood? There was a scene where he was running from the Union army and he crossed a river on a ferry where a man pulled the ferry across the river by way of a rope strung across the river. When the Union guys got on the ferry with their horses, Ol' Josey waited until they got half way across and then shot the rope using a sniper rifle. It was pretty funny.

There's a similar type of ferry across Lake Windermere from Bowness to Ambleside. Situated in the Lake District, in the North West of England it only takes a few minutes and the scenery is suberb and lands you in the heart of Beatrix Potter country. Look Bowness on Windermere up in Wikitravel.
