This happened in storage on an external hard drive. The photos were good out of the camera.

Not sure what causes this, but I had the same thing happen to my pictures on an inferior SD card I put in my cell phone.

A going bad / is bad card. Which ever card has the bad file, trash the card.

Corrupted files...perhaps you removed the card before turning off the camera. Try formatting the card in camera, if that doesn't resolving it, trash it.

I had this happen to my D800. It was the sensor going away. After spending $760 it is back to normal use.

Next time, before you respond, maybe you should read his post, he said the images were fine coming out of the camera. Which means they were good on the card, otherwise when he viewed the images he would have seen they were corrupted. Most likely it was a post processing issue since they were fine coming out of the camera.

Define "good out of the camera"...

What are you using to view them?

Everything you plug in in a usb connected you need to eject before removing any device. It doesn’t matter if this is a cell, computer, tablet or whatever. In the past I damaged data because of this.

If you're certain that that's where it happened then the hard drive itself is probably responsible, especially if the same thing happens each time you access those particular files. You could run Chkdsk on that drive, but if there's a lot of important stuff on it, a replacement may be in order.

Reading from the writer on this, Storage/External Hard Drive....I'll take a stab at this. I used to utilize LightRoom and have literally thousands of various images taken with Nikon D500, Nikon D850 with XQD cards and SD cards. I typically remove the images off the cards then format them after each use when placed back in the camera.
I was able to communicate with an executive/part owner of a large third party firm re this and showed him some of the images (very close to what is shown here). After spending a lengthy period of time inspecting the cards as well as images on the hard drive, I downloaded 3 other imaging packages (CorelDraw, ACDSee & PicturePro). In each one of them opening the image that was "corrupted in LightRoom, appeared perfectly normal in the other SW imaging packages as well as a normal print....End story there was an issue with LightRoom & I had 2 choices, 1 (Remove, reboot, total reinstall), or totally remove & redo the library/datastore)...End result it worked fine after that....As this writer didnt specify his imaging sw, might this be a cause???

So you still have the original on an internal drive? It's a shame to lose nice shots, but life happens.

These shots were taken about 10 years ago before I started using Light Room. My post processing at the time was limited to occasional cropping using Paint Shop Pro 5. I transferred my photos from my memory card to my computers hard drive using a card reader. They were good on my hard drive. As my hard drive filled I bought a WD My Book external hard drive and moved my photos to that. Later I wanted something more portable to us with a laptop when on the road. I bought a WD My Passport which was smaller. There are many files on the drive that have the same type degradation. They are all in a archive directory that I moved from the My Book. I'm guessing that something happened moving to files to the My Book or during the time they were stored on it. None of the files moved directly to the My Passport drive are damaged.

I'm also noticing some anomalies on several photos that I have had stored on my CPU that were not there several years ago. I've also had quite a few photos just disappear from storage on my CPU. Thank goodness I have them backed up.
