I researched & took a long hard look at my budget & purchased a canon 60D w/an 18-135 kit lens, & also a canon 50mm 1.8 & sigma 50mm 1.4 used All items were used & I'm thankful for my little 18 Meg camera. This is enough for me, for now anyway.

John, it doesn't work that way. One is a lens resolution the other is sensor resolution. You can then upscale your comparison to a full frame sensor. Sensor size is critical when you are making enlargements. Otherwise, a 1/16 inch sensor with a high pixel count would make enlargements of 40X60 inches.

To buy a high pixel camera just to crop has other problems like photo detail, low light, fbs, lens quality, etc.

I realise that, and I was trying to keep it simple. Fact is though, you'd need around 14mp to match the best the OM2 lens I had could offer and it was probably similar for other SLR lenses around at that time. The size of the sensor and the space occupied by each individual pixel are points to be considered and I'd like to aim toward a 5D mk3 full frame 22mp job. The pixels on this have got room to breathe and will need less manipulation later to recover any abnormalities in the image. I've a lot to learn in this respect but think I've got it right thus far.

My Nikon AW100 (16mp on a point and shoot) illustrates this perfectly. Blow up (100%) any image taken with it in anything less than bright sunlight and the amount of in-camera processing is clearly visible.

Also, it depends what you want to do with camera. If you aren't going to make large prints or you aren't taking low light photos, it really doesn't matter. A 4x6 print looks great even with a point and shoot.
Going fully frame may have other problems because you may have to buy more expensive lens.
Just look at what type of pictures you like to take and find what best would give you the results you like and can afford.
Good luck.

The 50D is a great camera that takes wonder photos. I have a ton of my photos on the walls in my house. They were taken with half a dozen different cameras. I defy anyone to match the camera with the photo. The pictures are 16 X 24.

while we try to decide which full frame to get Nikon or Canon now there is a rumor that canon is coming out with a 46 mega pixel camera.
And just when I though the megapixel wars were over.

They had no choice after Nikon introduced the D800.

I'm waiting to buy the first 100MP camera. Then I'll be able to take beautiful photographs! :D

Rent the movie. You'll get it then. Only movie I've seen more is the original Jaws. Probably Jaws 40, Animal House 35.
