The first is sooc, (jpg) the only edit I did to the second one was to remove the road sign with the PSP clone brush, (saved as jpg) and got this terrible color banding, Can any body tell me how to prevent/correct this?

The first image you posted is 12 megabytes, the second file is less than 1 megabyte. I'm not well versed on jpg compression, but I would say that's where your problem lies. Click here for PSP info on working with jpgs.

I removed your sign from the first image using befunky.com online app. It resized the dimensions slightly - from 6016x4016 pixels to 4088x2729 (I don't know why, maybe it can't handle any wider ), but the result is still nearly 10 mb and no banding that I can see.

#2 - I resized my result to 1500 pixels wide, which is now a file less than 2 mb - more conducive to posting online or emailing. The quality may be starting to break down at this point. Sharper eyes will know for sure (in befunky I kept the quality slider at high).

Part of the issue is that jpg images are 8bit and thus prone to this type of banding during editing. Banding can be explained easily. If there are more pixels than there are brightness levels, you get banding.

Thank you for your reply, it seems that what you are saying is that PSP re-sized the jpg to a much smaller file which caused the banding. I'll have to see if I can fix it.
Thanks again for the reply, and sorry for the delayed response, been a busy couple days.

What I didn't understand, is that with the only edit being removal of the sign, why other parts of the picture would be changed. I think Linda explained it by showing the different size of the two files. If I understand correctly, it seems that PSP down-sized the file.
Thanks for the reply

In my earlier reply was a link to PSP Help on how to manage that. Click here. That page includes this info:

...Choose File - Export - JPEG Optimizer.
Click the Quality tab, and set or type a value in the Set compression value to control.

I tested on my computer with Photoshop CC
Somewhere in your settings I think your quality for .jpg is not set to 100%. Might be in your Quick Export Preferences. I never use Quick Export.
I tried a couple of ways to reduce your file and all came out fine. This one is 1349 pixels wide. If I have a big file and want to reduce it I will go File>Export>Export as> in the new box I will change the % to a desired number that reduces the file size to something that will upload better. In this example shown I used 33% for a 1.1M file. When you change the % you will see the new file size in the left side bar.
Hope this give you your answer.
Jim

Thanks, I got that from your earlier reply, haven't got to try it yet. This editing stuff is hard for me to get my head around, so many variables and settings, and not enough time to learn it properly, but I will keep plugging away at it...maybe someday I'll get it... if it all doesn't change by then
Thanks again for your help, I'm sure I will be back with more questions soon

I didn't "export" the file, I opened a jpg, did a quick removal of the sign and saved as a jpg. I don't know if "exporting" is the same as saving, as I told Linda, I have a difficult time with all this processing stuff. Thanks for the help, I'll give it a try
