Maybe this D850 is too much camera for me.

Why won’t the shutter button work all the time? Why does it stop working. Works about 10% of the time. Have tried it on P, M, S, A modes.

Live view works every time all the time.

Ive switched lens from Nikon 24-70, sigma 50-500, fresh battery inserted

Does anyone know from my description?

Many camera setting will not allow shutter release if focus can’t be achieved. One thought.

There are several possibilities, one may be that you have the camera set to expose only if the scene is in focus. Trying to take an exposure prior to focus will result in a button push with nothing happening.

Most likely shutter release is set to focus as Marty suggested. Custom settings menu / Autofocus / AF C And or AF S / Release - and I bet you are good to go.

And you might have focus set to not work from shutter button. Try AF button before shutter.

Did you buy it new, or used? If used, I would also suggest a factory reset. There is tremendous flexibility in the setup of this camera, and that's the best way to eliminate any of several "weird" things it can be set up to do. Also...check the focus mode. Sometimes being in continuous focus mode can produce similar symptoms.

A lot of UHH members have already described what the issue can be. I set AF-C and AF-S priority selection to focus on my Nikons. If you set yours to release, it will probably allow you to take the photo.

Also, are you possibly focusing on something that is closer than the minimum focusing distance for the lens?

I agree that the problem is most likely focus-related. Perhaps your lens is on manual focus...

Almost all cameras have the same symptoms you described including my Iphone. But when you know how it works it works everytime. It's not possible to have a camera that is too much for you. If it doesn't work as you like it's not enough for you rather than too much.

Lots of on point answers. But before you make yourself crazy and sell the thing, I suggest you peruse the manual, and as you have done, try different modes and settings. There are a lot of custom settings, and default settings for those that you need to be familiar with. All it takes is a little patience and some reading, and maybe a nice single malt.

An addition, not only could it not be releasing because it doesn't have focus but: are you trying to take pictures outside the focus limit for you lenses? This most often happens when you are too close. And every lenses has a different focus range.

If your lens will focus to 6' and you are trying to take a picture at 5' it is never going to get focus. Learn that minimum focus distance for each of your lenses.

Just curious, have you read all the instructions?
That generally helps.

You most likely want release only. Also check the shooting mode dial, put it on CH. You also might want to try back button focus if you haven't already. Takes a little while to get use to.

Is there an SD card in the camera? Is it set to allow it to be written to? Just a thought. Good luck!
