Fire-Eater. And Removing a Messy Background

The shooting angle meant we saw a rather complex mess looking up into the roof structure of the boiler room. To get rid I selected and blurred the area. I have chosen to let very little of the structure show but it can be varied to taste now by either reducing the blur (it's a smart filter) or reducing opacity of the layer, depending which effect is preferred. Needless to say I've also added some smoke textures and changed the overall image to suit my preferences, but without the blur it would not be nearly so focussed on the subject. Could do with a bit more foreground to balance it nicely - but what do you think otherwise? By the way, I've converted to sRGB to keep the colours of the thumbnail as I see them, or thereabouts. The original Lr version is shown below.

Nice work, magnetoman. I'm torn between which of the photographs I like better. For some reason the surroundings enhance the fire-eating person along with her costume.

The work you did to remove that background is commendable, but I'm still undecided.

I think I you did a wonderful job, with what to me is a very cluttered background. The focus is now on the fire eater. If I had taken this shot I am not sure I would have reached your same solution. Well done.

Thanks Bob. I think she would need brightening up at the very least, and probably fade the roof area somewhat if we were to go with the ‘as is’ version. Just too messy for me but I do see what you mean.

Thanks Frank - if you have other suggestions it’s fine to let me have them!

When I said I am not sure how I would have reached the same conclusion you did. It’s because I am not sure how I could have handled the background. I would not change anything you did.

It was the best group shoot a I’ve done Linda - not particularly for this lady, whom I didn’t find easy to work with, but there were models, Reenactors, steampunks, bikers, and lots of them. It was a Christmas treat for everyone that had supported the organisers during the year. Unfortunately everything I had booked at the beginning of this year got postponed and they are only just starting again. Should have done one last week but the venue was in a cv hotspot so I gave it a miss. Next one is end of the month, so hoping for better.

Glad you like this one.
