Windows 10 now has your Windows Key (Serial Number) tied to your Microsoft account, simply logging in with the new motherboard installed will activate the license.

Have you tried the built in Troubleshooter.
Go to Settings-Update & Security-Troubleshoot-Additional Troubleshooters-Playing Audion

However, since the speakers work, I think the Headphones output isn't selected.

I experience a similar when I don't use the headphone/mic jack for a while. Try inserting and removing the mini-plug several time (possibly a dozen or more). Some jacks build up a thin oxidation coat just sitting and this can block the signal. We had several instruments with extreme problems working in the lab environment.

My desktop works fine (xps 8920) except when the headphones are plugged into the front of the case no sound comes out. I am able to use my external speakers which are plugged into the rear USB slot. That works fine. My pc is under warantee and is 3 years old. The tech (after diagnosis) wants to send someone onsite to replace my mother board just to fix the headphone jack. This does not seem to be right and can screw things up on win10. Do you think she knows what shes talking about...

The use of the USB for the speakers is probably conflicting with the on-board sound or sound card (whichever you have). You have probably made the USB the default for sound. Changing the motherboard will not help. If your speakers have a headphone jack try using it.

Thanks all for the advice. Like someone said I don't think the agent was that knowledgeable. I think from some of the replies I will pursue the software issue and maybe reinstall Realtek because I don't see a Headphone selection in my volume menu.

I will advise
John

Coild be a bad physical connection, e.g., ports are soldered in. If that connection is broken, that could explain the need to replace the motherboard.
