This is an exercise to see what I could do with the cascading fir - I thought selection might be a bit of a challenge. In the event, it wasn't too bad and I'm happy enough with the result. There are several other layers involved to make the picture, of which three are the firs. Initially using a Colour Range selection and then refining the effect by selectively masking other copy layers. OK, you can get picky in places, but it's not bad for a tricky subject! What do you think? Please download to see correct colours.

The purpose of the exercise was to see what could be done with selections, and I'd say you succeeded. The only criticism - which has nothing to do with the selections - is that the lighting on the woman would in reality be darker and she would have something in the way of shadows on her. But that's nitpicking.
Was your test prompted by an updated/improved tool in your software, Dave? Mastery of current selection tools and/or improvements in them certainly offers more even intriguing possibilities with compositing. Thanks for showing us!

Yep, I didn’t take it that far RG, it’s not an image I will do anything with. Thanks for your comments.

No, it was prompted by the complexity of the fir Linda - that made me wonder if colour range would be good enough. Certainly agree that there been improvements with selection methods in P.s., and that’s been pretty continuous for several years.
I see you took on your own challenge head on. RG wrote of the woman being darker. I did not pick that up until he mentioned it. But as you mentioned it was more of an exercise. So for that I would say congratulations on your successes.

Thanks Frank - I was surprised at how well the selection worked, just requiring a little bit of help to bring reality back in places. I seldom try colour range, but will use it more in future I think.
