My Canon R5 body and RF100-500 lens are on its way. I just want to know what settings fellow hoggers who own a R5 have set -(different menu settings in the camera) especially for bird photography. Thanks in advance.

During this excellent 100-500L review video, starting about 15:40 (of the 29:06 play length), the author speaks to his AF tracking settings as he follows a seagull in flight: https://www.cameralabs.com/canon-rf-100-500mm-f4-5-7-1l-is-usm-review/

For shutterspeed and aperture, it depends on your lighting situation and the type of bird. In the video, for a minute in the presentation starting at roughly 15:40, he discusses all his AF settings as he tracks a seagull flying toward him. My own experience for gulls flying / gliding toward my shooting location is a shutter at 1/1000sec. Whether you go with shutter priority or manual exposure, that would be the speed you need for this bird type. Adjust faster or slower based on your situation.

Thank you Paul. I will review the video link you sent. I am sure that will provide me a lot of useful information for settings. Best regards to you and thanks again.

For BIF with R5 this is good. not the 100-500 but 100-400 with a 2x. It's good video using the R5. I just got my R5 and playing with the RF 24-105mm. Have yet to use my 100-400MM II either solo or with the 1.4x. You will spend a lot of time just trying set up your default settings for your style of photography. What your setting will be depends more on you. For instance I just set up mine for back button focus. The af-on button is now for non moving pics while the * is for animal eye(but could be people). This way I can shoot a tree and if a bird comes into play just slide my thumb to the * and I'm ready. No going back into the menus and losing the shot.

Thank you. I will try the settings that you mentioned for Af on for still and the * button for birds and animals. Btw did you wanted to send link to a video for the 100-400 that you mentioned was better than 100-500. Could you please send the link to the video. Thanks again.

I just go for the Flying Bird icon in the intelligent auto modes ;-)

An excellent thread at Fred Miranda .com is at

https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1666634

I do not know if you can read it without signing up or not. Some very advanced users on that site and thread. Somewhat like Paul (CHG CANON) on this site. They do get in the weeds sometimes, like everywhere on the internet.

It goes very deep into menu settings for the R5 and R6. There are a ton of options in the Auto Focus sections of the menu.

I already have both the R5 and the 100-500. When I received the lens, I went to Green Cay Preserve and photographed birds both in flight and static. The lens tracked great. The main thing is shoot at 20fps. My settings were: ISO 1000 and 1/800 of a second in TV mode. I got some very good shots of birds flying.

The next time I go out, I would Raise the ISO to 2500 or even 3200 and shoot at 1/2000. I will definitely get many more keepers. You can crop substantially if needed.

A couple of other thoughts: I use the Peak Design Camera Strap. I attach the strap to the tripod sockets on both the camera and the lens. This balances the camera much better than having the straps on the camera alone.

The 24-240 is a fabulous walk around lens. I have the 24-105 but it has stayed in the closet since I received the 24-240.

Hope I've been helpful,

Walt B

Hope this is helpful

Try looking at videos on YouTube by Jan Wegner. He does a step by step guide to setting up the R5 for birds in flight which I use and continue to do so.
