Hogeroos,
I am trying to send an image via Gmail with a 25MB upper limit for transmittal. In PS the size is listed at 1.19MB at 768 x 540 pixels and a resolution of 72PPI. Even in Elements, it is listed at the same parameters.
However, when I try to send it via Gmail the size shown is over 23,667 KB and is too big. It is a .PSD format if that makes a difference. What have I not learned about image size and Gmail?
Thanks to all,

Use a cloud service. Post the image and share it. I use DropBox.

Are you trying to send a PSD so someone can edit your image? Or, are you just trying to share a digital image? For sharing, use JPEG and resize to just the pixel resolution needed to fill their screen. All the reasons 'resizing' the digital image are explained in detail at this post: Recommended resizing parameters for digital images. You can just scroll to the screen print examples of 'how' for various software at the bottom of the post.

If desiring to share a large file for purposes of editing, just use a free service like Dropbox that has a 2GB limit for the free version.

What does your OS say is the file size?
Email clients don't care what size PS or Elements report, they also don't care about X by Y pixels, they go by the OS defined file size value.
(ie. Windows Explorer.)

It sounds like you looked at the size of the resultant jpg, not the psd file itself. As Longshadow suggests, open File Explorer and click on details. What does it show for the psd? btw, the file size of a psd with layers flattened will be much smaller than leaving the layers all open and available for editing. The jpg is a different story. And pixels, along with ppi, matter not. Gmail is about file size, not number of pixels.

Longshadow,
Since I have never checked a file size outside of the photo program I am using, I don't think I know where to look in the OS to check it further.

CHG_Canon,
Thank you for that enormous amount of information. I will say that I did use the PSD extension since one of my photo friends does like to work on photos and offer suggestions. I will devour your post and maybe figure this all out soon.
Thanks,

You can send a larger file with gmail. It will prompt you for access to your Google drive which is cloud based and included free with gmail.

1.19MB = 768 x 540 x 3 bytes, so PS is just telling you the size it would be if saved as a bitmap. The PSD file hold much more information (layers, pallets, probably lots of other stuff), making the PSD much larger.

If the receiver just needs the image, and doesn't need to edit it in PS, export it as a JPEG (which will be under 1MB) and email that.
