Insect from a few years back.

Today as I was going thru older pictures on my PC. I came across a few of this red insect. These are from a few years back. I don't think I posted these before. If I remember correctly it was late in the day and overcast. My tripod was in the car and I was about to head home when I saw a few of these crawling under the leaves. They are not very sharp and heavily cropped.

Great shots. Where were these taken? Those Mantids not natives to PA, I think.

The northern part of South Carolina while on vacation. I think they're Stagmomantis carolina, I was not sure what they were at the time because they were so small. Later a friend told me they were mantis.
I do see them in PA occasionally except they are much larger, never that small.

The mantis is particularly neat. So far, I have not found any Stagmomantis or other native genera juveniles with this unique assassin bug mimic coloration or head morphology in the US, but my search is not very complete. I'll continue looking. Wonder if it is introduced, or just otherwise undiscovered.

I'm not sure. I heard of people transplanting mantis. I really don't have a clue. I didn't know what they were. There were a few moving around under the leaves. This was near Andrew Jackson State parks Crawford trail. The color caught my attention or I wouldn't have seen them.

I am living in SC (Greenwood) so I will keep an eye out for this. I've seen several mantids around my house, three species so far, but none I think that will have those fine nymphs. Maybe I'll get up to A.J.SP next spring or summer.
