I am lucky enough in October, to be off on a Caribbean Cruise, sailing from Southampton England, Via Ponta Delgado in The Azores. then visiting Antigua,Tortola, St Maarten,St Lucia,Grenada,Barbados and finally Madeira,on my way home. as well as Flora and Birds etc,I am looking for suggestions of not to be missed photo opportunities, prefferably fairly near to the main harbour's and their towns, all suggestions greatly appreciated.
I am shooting with a Canon 7d
With a Canon 400 D.O.Prime,
Canon 70-200 Mk 2 2.8 Zoom
Canon 17-85 Zoom
Canon 1 1/4 converter
Never been to any of those places but my advice would be take and take and take and pile those memories up,enjoy your trip.
Take a circular polarising filter, a must.
Enjoy your trip and take loads of photos to post here when you get back

If you have the time while on St. Maarten's take a taxi to the French side of the island and visit the city of Marigot. Also Orient Bay Beach on the way over to Marigot, I personally feel the photographic opportunities are more abundant at those locations than they are in Philipsburg (Dutch side) where the cruise ships usually pull in. I spent almost two months there a few years ago and so I have a pretty good feel for the island. On the Dutch side, Simpson Bay area and Dawn Beach are also great spots to visit. Enjoy!
;) ;)
This is a great cruise. Took a similar one in 2008 about two months after purchasing my Nikon D80.
There are a great number of photo ops both on the land tours as well as the ship - entering into the harbors and
departing. The sunset opportunities are amazing.
Hope you don't mind me attaching a couple of photos I took as I was introduced to the DSLR world.
The first is a bay in St. Maarten and the second is St. Lucia.
Have fun and make sure you relax if possible.
Dave
BTW there's a guy in Barbados who does carvings from mahogany. It he's there and you buy a piece, he'll sign it for you. And I'm attaching a photo of the second largest cricket bat in the world - I think this was outside the Tommy Bahama Rum tour on Barbados.
Have fun on the cruise. Don' put yourself in a position where you have to worry about equipment.
I would take the teleconverter and the 17/85.

That should be quite a cruise! We've done NY to the Carib many times, but that's just one week. Be sure to use lots of sunscreen and wear a hat. The sun is much more intense in that area.
We love cruising the Caribbean (we're going again in Dec). The sunrises, sunsets, clouds, blue skies, aqua waters, colorful buildings....ENJOY! But, if you can, take a few excursions around the islands. If you are even a little adventuresome, you can get off the ship and find a local guide (less expensive and less crowded than the ship excursions, but the quality is hit and miss) and take a tour. They always know where to find good photo ops and provide tons of local history and color. If you want the 'peace of mind' that the cruise tour gives you, go right ahead and use them instead. You won't be sorry. Everywhere you turn you'll find interesting shooting ops. RELAX and ENJOY.
If you have a chance to visit on Tortola drop in at the Bomba shack and have some fun there...photo ops everywhere. LOL...brings back some fun memories. Have a great trip..what is not to like about the Carribean..beautiful.

Please don't limit yourself to flora and birds. Look at the buildings at every port of call. Also people. Go crazy and take pictures of everything, you wont regret it. On top of all of this have a good time
Do not miss Orient Beach (clothing optional) when you go to St.Maarten. Your ship should offer the excursion that includes lunch. I would wear my trunks under my shorts, and change after swimming. Below are some photos.
I would not take a 400mm D.O. on a cruise unless I intended to go to a wild bird sanctuary. IMHO You will be sorry you took all that stuff.

Our taxi driver said that when people stayed at those clothing-optional resorts, they brought very little luggage. :D

Yes, but even sans clothing, many have considerable baggage.
