Is a Nikon Refurbished camera worth it?

In June 2020 I bought a Nikon Refurbished D7500 from Adorama (a very reputable company). In my various photo walkabouts the camera has worked fine. Recently (passed any warranty period) I noticed the battery compartment door was missing. I don’t know where I lost it. I can’t believe I tore it off. The comparable door on my old much used D90 seems quite sturdy, and I haven’t torn it off in over 10 years of intensive use on my various trips. Maybe this begs the notions of:
• Are refurbished items as sturdy and the new off the shelf items?
• Refurbished buyers beware?
• Inspect your refurbished item VERY carefully.
Do you in your collective wisdom think this is worthy of repair at a reasonable price (<$200)?

Nikon refurb'd items are actually better, in some ways, then off the assembly line.

Refurb'd items contain the same parts as factory original.

Refurb'd buyers only need be aware of intended market countries. I'd purchase a refurb'd camera but only if the serial number indicated, in my case, a camera intended for the U.S. market.

When purchasing a refurb'd camera it's best to be the same as a brand new camera, check it over carefully to make sure everything is acceptable.

You can purchase a new battery door and probably replace it yourself. The cost will be a few dollars.

I lost one a few years back and was able to order for a few bucks ($8.99 Amazon prime) and easy to install.

Since then I’ve double checked latching and haven’t lost another.

I have been very satisfied with Nikon refurbs. Your loss had nothing to do with camera being refurb.

Be assured a Nikon refurb is like a new product. Unfortunately what has happened to you can happen to anyone. It simply happens.
I have nothing against refurb products. Those I bought were of excellent quality and like new.

As has been already said, just order the door for a few dollars and you are set to go again.

You could always buy a grip to cover the battery.

Refurbished Nikon bodies come with either a 30 or 90 day warranty. New come with a one year.
Yes, refurbished and new Nikon bodies are identical.
No, I do not believe your door will cost that much, call Nikon at 1-800-645-6687 and they should be able to tell you.
By the way, Nikon lenses new come with a 5 year warranty, refurbished come with the 30 or 90 day warranty, BUYER BE WARE.

Here you go. Cheap and takes about 10 seconds (or less) to replace.

I've been using a refurbished Nikon Coolpix S9500 for about five years with no problem. I carry it
usually in a shirt pocket, when I don't have my full size camera with me.

Instead of $200 I would just put a piece of gaffer tape over it!

I’ve read that refurbs are returns that get a thorough workout to ensure everything works, something that not every assembly line camera gets. Those are inspected on a random basis. You must have snagged the door on something.

The difference in quality the Dxxxx bodies are consumer level where the Dxx/Dxxx bodies are targeted for people that use their cameras a lot. The Dx bodies are even heavier duty specifically for people that are liable to give it a beating. Think the photographer at the football game that gets run over by a player.

Gatorcoach your the man! Thank you for being proactive on NMphotoguy battery door issue... It's folks like you that make UHH a worthwhile place to invest time on... again, many thanks!

NMphotoguy All my Nikon "Pro" bodies are Refurbished directly from Nikon USA (Not B&H and especially not Adorama) There are a myriad of "Refurbishers" in the marketplace besides Nikon USA. Be very leery of Adorama they recently shipped me a "Like New, Still in the Box" battery for my D700 that was DOA and would not take a charge. Yes the refunded my money and provided an RMA but I was out the time and inconvenience of having test the item on several battery chargers and to return it. Time is money for me...

All my Nikon USA refurbished Pro bodies have functioned perfectly over many years (2 D3's and 2 D3x's) Also a high end prosumer body (a D810)... They all came with everything a new model is shipped with...

btw, I assist many commercial shooters in my market and they advised me to purchase my "Kit" refurbished from the vendor... Said that refurbs go through an extensive QA process that new kit doesn't... New is only "spot checked" and yes there are problems with "New" equipment...

Hope this helps, and moving forward I would highly recommend purchasing directly from Nikon USA... paying the sales tax is well worth the peace of mind in my humble estimation...

All the best on your journey NMphotoguy
