IR Processing with PSE

A few months ago, the fine folks at LifePixel converted my trusty Canon S100 to IR with a 590nm filter. With their tech support's help, I finally got comfortable with white balance but most used Photoshop while I struggled with ON1 PR and whatever else I had. Then, I came across this YouTube Video that utilizes Photoshop Elements 20 with surprisingly (I think) good results. I have PSE 19 and it works just as well. Plus, PSE will load PS created Actions (ATN files) that make processing even easier.

Anyway, the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqfUfQfZSxI

And here's a quick example to show what's achievable without too much effort.....

The video conked out on me. I am aware of the 590nm filter. Is this the best it can do?

The color may be more vibrant from a 590nm, because it allows more visible light passing through, I have a camera converted to full spectrum IR, I use several different nm filters for IR photo, I like the 590nm the most for color IR imaging.

The 590nm filter is referred to as the Super Color IR filter on LifePixel's website. The image I attached contains mainly tree foliage that hadn't turned yet. Hence, lot of green, which often shows up as white like. You'll see examples in the matrix below.

In your image, the color of the sky shows nothing near "Royal blue" but looks purple, and the tree foliage are not "Golden orange" as stated by LifePixel.
Besides, the general "Fall color" will have nothing to do with IR, it may produce different result of colors. The 590nm will make the green of the tree into golden orange with proper custom WB and PP.
This is only my experience shooting with the 590nm filter, may be I am wrong. If you may allow me to show one of my examples!

Please do! I’m still in the early stages of wrestling with IR. Thx!

GrayFox said in part: " I finally got comfortable with white balance but most used Photoshop while I struggled with ON1 PR and whatever else I had. "

With my camera white balance is achieved with white paper and "custom WB" a camera easy setting for a series of shots taken in the daylight of the moment.

Most any photo editor that takes PS classic format plugin tools would work fine; PSE 2020 is not necessary nor any Adobe or On-1 program.

RB swap and others are a click away using the free archives program from free archive download:

The 590 nm is a good choice altho no filter is better since it gives you a light-sensing tool that will see full spectra or a nitch determined by the filter you attach. If you wish to take pure IR with your camera you can add a filter, for example, 790 nm for classic physics defined Near-IR.

Be sure to use the straightening tool to get the trees standing upright.

Thank you for your permission!
Here's my sample, the first was out of the camera with 590nm filter and in camera custom WB on a 18% grey card. The second one was after channel swap in "GIMP" and color enhancing with Photo shop-El.

Hi... I took your "before" jpeg, swapped channels in ON1, did a transform tilt and crop, then played with colors, etc. I sampled for WB on the clouds and a few other spots to get the sky where I wanted as well as using "As Shot." What I'm struggling with is the sky, i.e. to get it that nice soft blue before working with the foliage colors. Any suggestions would be appreciated, including what you would do in Photoshop. Thx. TL

After getting the image out of the camera, I used "GIMP" program first to re-did the AWB, and adjusted the saturation to (+) in some degree, then did the channel swap. After that, I opened the image with Photo-shop Elm (I still using PS-EL_10), I went to "Enhance > Adjust color > Adjust Hue/Saturation , with the process in this adjustment, I adjusted: Reds; Yellows; Greens; Cyans; Blues; and Magentas to the final image that I like!
Hope this will help!
