Help...getting rid of a shadow on a face

I was taking pictures at a friend's wedding recently and took this image. I am pretty happy with my editing results, but don't know how to remove the shadow from his face. I was there as a guest, not their photographer, but they liked my version of "the kiss" better than his. Is it possible to remove the shadow? The first is the original, the second is my edit.

I think it's going to be difficult to get rid of those shadows (and make it look good).

You might try taking this type of photo with a flash. If you did use one, get a more powerful one.

If your are shooting people in the direct sun, have the sun over their shoulder (highlighting the subject) and light up their faces, which are in shadow, with the flash.

These are all good points....and normally things I would do.

I was not the photographer for the wedding, so didn't feel I could get up and move around without disturbing the ceremony.

This is the actual kiss from the ceremony so there was no control over their position or the sun.

I was in the back row, so flash would not have helped.

Hoping someone out there know about a Photoshop technique I have overlooked.

I agree, but that's not always possible when you are not controlling where and how the event is taking place, which I find is the case in most shoots I find myself wanting to take. Sometime we just have to live with what we can get. Most of the time I'd rather have the shot, then not take it.

If U must take a shot with the sun in that position then a fill flash is required or a reflector.

Try selecting just the shadow part of his face and lightening it. It doesn't get rid of the shadow but it gives more definition to his face.

Wow that's pretty damn good and about as close as you'll get.

I see your challenge was that you were a guest not the photog and were limited to the resources you could use. That's where Photoshop comes to the rescue. Mike did a great job with the fill-light, the only thing I'd suggest is painting the blown-out portion of the grooms face a little darker to even it out. I don't think you'll be able to get rid of that line without it looking fake. It's alot better though. Mike - did you use fill-light in LightRoom?

I bought a new computer last year with Win 7 on it, so my Photoshop 7 and CS PS Version 8 won't run on it. I bought a program called Zoner Photo Studio 13 Pro. It's similar to PS, the older versions anyway, I can't afford CS5 right now, so not sure if this will help you or not.

I first enlarged photo to 200%, the side tool box has a brush called Select Brush. Puts a circle around what you want to work on. Circled the two faces, and picked the size brush that fit the area first.

Went to adjustments at top of program, clicked on Enhance Colors. It has all the usual slides for colors, RGB, hue, saturation, brightness, contrast, and gamma, ect.

All I did was increase the brightness and gamma till it looked like what I sent. The whole thing took less than a couple minutes. My old Win XP computer is down right now, bad video card, and it has both my PS's on it, so I can't use it right now. I'm getting where I use Zoner more than I do PS.... and I think it's a lot easier to navigate than PS.

I'm sure PS can do the same, but since mine are down, I can even try right now.... Mike

PS.. I tried taking the line out on his face, but it all looked phoney, maybe with more time screwing around with it, you might find something that looks good.

Don't know what version of W7 you are using, but I have a brand new laptop with W7 64 Bit and PS 7 works just fine.
