Very clear photos. Looks like a Noctuid looper cat -- 4 pair subterminal prolegs; Geometrid loopers have 2 pr. Might be a Catocala underwing moth.

thanks,it was about 2 1/2 -3" long

It does have the look of some of the underwing cats. The key is to ID the host plant as best you can, and search for 'caterpillar on ...X.... ' in BG. Even if the X is 'pine tree'. Not sure if it is.
