I just got an email notice from SmugMug. "Back up all your images on SmugMug".

So you can use them as backup too.

Smugmug actually uses Amazon S3 for their cloud storage.

I looked into various cloud providers to supplement my local backups, and chose Backblaze. Unlimited storage, operates automatically in the background, and is attractively priced - what's not to like?

Files are files. Nothing special about photographers. But they may entice them.
No documents like DOCs, spreadsheets, PDFs, receipts, and other important items?
Places that only backup image files are worthless. Other things are important also!
Some places don't backup RAW files. Go with a company that allows backing up ANY file type.

I use Carbonite. All automatic and it indicates the backup status of the files and directories.

Agree wholeheartedly. Do not differentiate file type on backups. I happen to use Backblaze and it's fine.
However, I do have folders of photos which are included in the daily Backblaze run. Also, I run a complete, incremental backup to a 4tb hard drive.

I’ve kept my file backup fairly simple. All my photos are automatically backed up on an external hard drive when they are downloaded. The computer hard drive is backed up on another external hard drive once a week. Sensitive files are encrypted. Photos for family use are on my website. The only value in all this is to have the files available “when” my computer crashes.

Why do you need unlimited storage? Do you have infinite photos? Surely if there is a price per TB or petabyte you can just pay for what you need.

I use local storage on external RAID 5 devices. (Soon to be upgraded to RAID 6 for more failure resistance).

I use ThunderBay 8 enclosures from Other World Computing. Mine happen to be fitted out with 48 TB of hard drives. As I purchased the drives in the enclosure I have a no cost extended warranty.

Actually I have two of these. One primary and one (a secondary enclosure) for backup with GoodSync on a twice daily basis. Time Machine backs up to a volume on the secondary RAID device. The secondary enclosure is located remotely in a concrete storm shelter we built into the underground corner of the basement (We have a walk out basement).

My RAIDs are connected with fiber optic Thunderbolt 2 cables directly to my Mac which gives me about 20 GB second transfer speeds - thus no perceptible lag to the user.

It works for me.

Caveats:

Buy more than what you think you will need. Both drive size and expandability of the number of drives.
Be sure that the storage can be expanded and does not require hard drives that are matched so you can add and replace as needed.

Whatever you do, be sure to understand what you are buying.

A RAID is complete overkill for a backup and a waste of resources. There is no benefit to using a RAID for data you’re not accessing on a regular basis.

It simply means that you don't have to worry about going over an limit.
People paying for smaller areas may eventually need to "upgrade".
If you pay for 20Tb and only use 1, you're paying for what you don't need.
With unlimited, there is no concern about going over a plan limit.

Isn't RAID simply distributed active storage?

Check out iDrive. You'll be surprised at what you get for the price. Been using them for 2 years without a single problem.

I plan to take a look at them and compare when my current Backblaze subscription expires next year.

Thanks for the info.

Here is another thought. I just got a notice from SmugMug. "Back up all your images on SmugMug". They were asking me to consider uploading my library.

They advertise: "UNLIMITED, FULL-RESOLUTION PHOTO STORAGE"
Source: https://www.smugmug.com

So if they will take your entire library it might be a good competitive option. Just saying.

Last time I looked, Smugmug only stores JPG, no longer stores raw images...for me that is a show stopper as I shoot raw and want my original raw shots backed up.

As I understand their model, they’re a front-end portal and use Amazon S3 for their back-end storage, so I’d be comparing their cloud storage pricing to Amazon. Another downside of using them for cloud storage (other than the JPEG limitation you mention) is it’s one more layer between you and your storage that can fail, and if there’s a single Smugmug site that goes down, you can’t take advantage of the multiple copy geographically distributed storage that is a key advantage of Major cloud providers. Without sounding like fear mongering, I wouldn’t want a single portal to my data located anywhere near LA, SF or the Silicon Valley.

Agreed!

The other thing is, even though Flicker & Smugmug are probably both using Amazon S3, they only handle photo files, not data...S3 direct might be a little more costly, but it will store all your data.

I am thinking that there may be other alternatives that are more attractive and poentially offer more benefits
specifically for photographers

I do not store any documents and have decided not to store jpeg images in the cloud; keeping them on primary and backup external hard drives

Specifically, I require the following
RAW file storage
Unlimited storage
Ease of use (I'm "tech" deprived)

Attributes are more important than price (within reason)

Any suggestions from this great goup would be most appreciated

THANK YOU

I use Carbonite, backs up all files. But restoration is a bear. I have to restore once, and it took days.
