My wife had one done for close and one for far but she finds that her distance vision is not as good as she would like it to be. I had both mine done for distance and except for reading and the computer I see better than I have since elementary school. I do need glasses to read and for the computer, however. It works. I'd do it the same way again. There are expensive lenses that will adjust for both distance and reading. I'm not sure how good the focus is, however. You'd have to ask your doctor.

Had cataract surgery Dec, 2018. Astigmatism eliminated the near/far option. Now I only need glasses for reading. Since most cameras have diopter adjustment capability, no problems using a camera. Got cheap readers all over the place.

I had one eye "short" sighted and one "long" years ago. Has worked perfectly for me. Using left or right eye for camera viewfinder? Just use diopter adjustment.

Before having this surgery I heard nothing but how wonderful it was. There are side effects. My left eye now has the starburst phenomenon and it did not before. My right eye has a bright diagonal line going from 2 o'clock to 8 o'clock. I am designating the position of the line, not the time of day. Both these are really only visible when looking at point sources of light at night. They both interfere with night time driving vision.

Here are some other side effects:

I only have sight that's useful in my left eye. I had cataract surgery a year ago. Use viewfinder with my good eye, left. I also have glaucoma and dry eye if that wasn't enough.

So my specialist recommended I go for far vision and glasses for reading, computer etc. I just picked up several pairs of reading glasses at my pharmacy and it's worked out great. Cost was $800 out of pocket for me after the standard Medicare payment.

Last month I had laser surgery for the glaucoma which seems to be successful
In treating the glaucoma in addition to eye drops, YEAH, and refined my sight even more.

So goodluck, follow Drs. directions and yes I recommend distance vision, cheap reading glasses (lots of them), and if you had eyeglasses restriction on your DL go take that eye test w/o glasses and pass it! I did 1 month after cataract surgery last year.
Been out of photography for the last year and I'm ready to get back in there!

I had this done a couple of years ago. The surgeon said most people go with distance and readers, as it is more suitable for the way most people use their eyes. Mine went perfectly. They do one eye at a time, usually a couple of weeks apart or so. Side effects are rare, but possible. I had the option of laser surgery, required if you want to get some astigmatism corrected, but it was $1500 extra, and that was out of pocket. I had to show up an hour or two ahead of the surgery time, but that actually only took 15 minutes. You are awake, but heavily sedated so you can't move your head. Then an hour's wait, and off you go. The biggest thing for me is having to carry around two pairs of readers - my vision was so bad originally that the new distance lenses require +2 for reading and +1.5 for the computer. Good luck!

I have had both eyes done several years apart due to the seriousness of each one, both with regular lens'. Can read 95 % of print in good light. In the other 5% Dollar tree 1.25's work great. Infact I leave them home when going out and my wife is always asking me to read a label. Good luck. Each person is different.

Had mine done about 15 mo. ago and with Drs. advice went for distance and use reading glasses. He said he had complaints about the bifocal lense causing halos, car lights etc. at night.
I just adjust the viewfinder on camera so I don't have to worry about glasses, works fine for me. A little less money with single vision, but honestly I'd have paid more to not wear glasses all the time! Good luck!

Same here, depends how argentine print is. I adjust my cell phone font to larger and that works too.
