Hadrians Wall runs 73 miles across the neck of Northern England, Emporer Hadrian started construction in 122 AD to keep the Northern Barbarian tribes out. Much of the stonework has been removed over the centuries for other building purposes, but it is still an impressive site with its accompanying forts (The largest being Housesteads and Birdoswald). In normal times it attracts Thousands of visitors a year. Google can tell you a lot more than me. We visited a section of the Wall at a place called 'Steel Rig'. We intended to visit the the Large fort of Housesteads, but I'm afraid 'Corvid 19' put paid to that!

My Wife finding it hard work following the Wall as it snakes over steep cliffs. you can se the remains of a watchtower on the Wall.

when first completed the Wall could reach up to 15' high. They think the Romans whitewashed the other side of the Wall as a warning to hostile 'Britons' to keep out!

The Wall snakes off into the distance, hugging the the high ground to make any hostile action more difficult.

This is 'Sycamore gap'. one of the more visited parts of the Wall. this is where Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman were filmed in the Movie "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves'. Its where "Robin" saved the life of the little boy up in the tree!

This is the "twice Brewed" pub standing near 'Steel Rig'. We had a lovely Pub lunch in there after visiting the Wall. Beer has been Beer brewed on this site since since the 1400 hundreds, and there is a brewery attached next door!

You can see the brewery behind the Bar. Of course I bought a "Twice Brewed' pack of Beer...cheers.

It's surprising how precise and straigh-lined that wall is considering the amount of beer available at the time of its creation... :)
Thanks for sharing this bit 'o history!

Really like the one with the Mrs. climbing up and the detail below - shows how steep it is in parts.
Had a pint (or two) in the Twice Brewed many years ago when the Visitor centre was a Youth Hostel.
Thanks Doddy for the historical tour and great photos.
Thanks for the photos and information. I greatly enjoyed it.
Thanks for posting these, Doddy. I’ve read about the wall, of course (history & English degrees), but never had a real feel for it until now with your photos.

One can only imagine the manpower that went into constructing that defensive wall WCS. Thanks for looking and comment.

Cheers John, we were pushed for time, as the visitor centre looked interesting, hunger and thirst took precedent though!
